Advance problem. The item being sewed does not advance. It just stays in one place causing the thread to jam up. Cannot remove the plastic housing on the switch end to get at the parts that should advance the material being sewed. Fabric will not advance, causing thread to jam up. The teeth are all the way up and everything is clean of lint. The machine feeds fabric if I trial run it through without thread, however as soon as I add thread is when there becomes a problem and fabric will not run through machine. Please help!

Usually you need to hold the little latch open until the bobbin case is seated in the machine. Perhaps this video will help;

try using a pair of tweezers to get the ends of the thread
while pulling the thread manually turn the machine backwards so that the thread unwinds as you pull it out
other than that you may have to take it in for a service where the mechanic can remove items to get the thread out
that service may not be covered by warranty but that will depend on the mechanics attitude to wanting your business

Candace, while not familiar with the 4.2, I've had thread jams on my trusty old Pfaff. I hope this helps!

If you are able to totally remove the bobbin cover/stitch plate, please do so. Ideally, there will be one or two screws holding it in place.

carefully inspect the bobbin housing; thread likes to hide behind the housing. If you find some thread, use a tweezers to remove it.

If no thread is found, see if there are one or two screws holding the bobbin holder/raceway in place, or just a lever. Try to remove the bobbin holder, carefully noting what the orientation is of all pieces is (using a cellphone to capture pictures of before and after is great!).

Clear any threads from the raceway, carefully re-assemble everything, test and good luck!!!

If the bobbin is inserted with the thread spinning the wrong direction this will cause "birdnesting" - thread build up under needle plate, you need to cut thread to get the item off machine. flip the bobbin over into the case and try again. Also make sure you remove ALL thread caught up in "Birdsnest" when they happen.

Mary - I sympathise with you regarding the "vague manual directions". I have a Pfaff 4862 and if I hadn't found the video, I would never have managed to get it working. There are animated videos at the Pfaff website, just not sure if they would still have them up for the older models - but worth a try, surely.

Have you tried adjusting the tension as you sew?
Use a scrap piece of the same fabric, (doubled, etc to simulate piece you'll be working) and adjust the tension as you sew. Sometimes, that's all it takes.

could be a threading problem. on the top of the machine, where you go under the plate, pull the thread back and forth like you are flossing. you should feel the thread snap around the 2 wheels, then continue threading. hope it helps

My Singer 7422 seems to be jammed. When I start to make a stitch, the thread from the needle gets caught on something on the bottom and the thread goes over the bobbin.
