Question about Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18.1" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

1800FP power supply

I suspect my power supply also went bad. Using an Ohm meter I found 3 capacitors with infinite resistance, but I do not know if this means they are necessarily bad and leaking. I want to test the ICE chip, since this is the most common problem of these power supplies, but I do not know how. If this post could be directed to RoboTech, who seems the most experienced on this issue, it would be much appreciated.

I am unable to find a schematic (if you sent a link to one that would be great), but I have identified the chip on the board. What voltage or resistance properties are typically altered in a bad chip? Also, I am still wondering if capacitor leaks are possibly the real issue.

Several month ago I replaced this chip. Bought it on ebay for a couple of bucks. To prevent the chip from going bad you need to re-solder some diode connections.

    Seller:

resurrectekHe sent good instructions on the chip and mentioned how to prevent the chip from going bad again.

8 pin IC chip will not "pulse" to tell the main IC that the power pack is ok , replace this and the monitor will power back up
I believe the IC begins with an A it is a small bugger right in the middle part of the power pack. I am typing this note on one I repaired last week.
Good luck

The best way to get this to Robotek is to go to the home page and select find experts. Locate his name and use the ASK ME option. I will forward the link for this string to him as well.

Hi Sulli
I is likely that you wont need a circuit diagram to fault find the power supply. Switch mode supplies are difficult to diagnose as they either work or they dont, making them hard to diagnose Experience and information are your best assets here. Testing an integrated circuit can be even harder. Replace the device and see. This is how we do it in the real world. The capacitors you mentioned as having infinite resistance. This is generally ok if you are just looking for shorts. A capacitance meter should be used to check if they cap is actually functioning to spec. If you are unsure, just replace them, they cost a few cents. There is a company that sell reworked power supplies here. Or do a search on ebay, to locate the chip, or new power supply.
I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have aboutit, please get back to me here, or use the ASK function to go straightto me :) If you are still unsure, have problems, or we need to look atthe situation more deeply, then before you give a rating for thisadvice, hit the ASK buttonThanks for using FixYa, If you consider the advice I have given you assound, a FixYa rating is a great reward for my efforts to help you.Cheers.

AUTO FAN NOT WORKING BUT FAN ON WORKS

Sounds like the thermostat is either defective or has a bad connection. If you are familiar with using a multimeter (volt-ohm-current meter), it would be the device to use to trouble-shoot this problem. MAKE SURE THE HEATER IS UNPLUGGED!!!

With the meter set on Ohms, and the heater set on auto, set the heater to its lowest temperature setting. You want to see no resistance (close to zeor Ohms) when check across the thermostat (the temperature knob mounts on it). If you see high or infinite resistance, the thermostat's open and therefore defective. If the thermostat checks out OK, continue checking with the meter. You should have about zero Ohms between the hot pin on the power plug (the narrower one in N. America) and the heater motor lead. If it's open (high or infinite resistance), keep the one meter lead on the power plug and trace back, checking each connection until you find the defective one. Don't rule out a broken wire, maybe inside the insulation (but unlikely).

Smart Drive - no power

Dale, The pump is used as part of the power supply. If not connected the unit will appear dead. Check the pump resistance, should be 33 ohms. The pump has a thermal cut-out. If it's tripped, it should reset within 15 minutes. If it tripped, check for a blocked pump. Check for resistance from phase and nuetral to ground. This will identify if either the motor wiring harness or lid switch harness is shorting to the cabinet. Each water valve should ohm at 64ohms. If all this checks ok, then it's probably the motor controller. Catriver.

Whirlpool microwave keeps opening high voltage diode

If you do not have any experience in the repair of microwave ovens do not engage in their repairs because it is one of the most dangerous household appliances and the consequences can be disastrous. According to your description, low voltage circuit (220V or 110V) works well (light, turntable...). Obviously the problem is in a high voltage (HV) circuit which is made up of the magnetron, HV diode (rectifier), HV capacitor and HV fuse or protect diode. Failure is in any of these components in "HV circuit" or sometimes in interlock switch assembly or PC Board.

First, you must be sure which diode is blowed, reactifier or protect diode.

To check magnetron following this procedure:

Discconect the mains supply.
Check that the capacitor is discharged (by resistor 100 ohm / 10W or more).
Discconect the magnetron.
Measure the resistence between the disconnected terminals (should be app. 0.5 ohm).
Measure the resistance between the supply terminals (both) and earth. The resistance should be infinite.

Honda XL600VM 1991. Bike working fine and all of a sudden revs cut, feels like running on one cylinder, rev counter is going haywire. Hardly any power, will tickover but sounds rough, can just about...

That sounds like a problem with the pickup coils. they are mounted to your timing plate, Check them for resistance with an ohm meter, they should be around 5k ohms, if one shows infinite you've found the problem.

Why would the high voltage capacitor go bad?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. High voltage capacitors can and do fail when a microwave is used for long periods of operation, when the unit is operated with no internal load and sometimes for no reason at all other than the capacitor had an internal failure such as corrosion or a break down of the metal strips inside of it where the strips can make contact with the the case. I have been working on microwaves since the 70's and often there is no apparent reason for the failure of the HV cap.. They just sometimes fail.
However...... there is also a power diode in the microwave that is connected directly to one terminal of the HV Cap. If the power diode has failed it can cause subsequent failure of the HV Cap. The Sharp Power diodes can be found here: http://www.repairclinic.com/Sharp-Microwave-Parts?s=t-FH-DZA119WRKZ-%3d%3db113a6c41

You use and ohm meter on resistance to check the diode AFTER removing the terminal of the diode from the capacitor. NOTE: the capacitor must be shorted across the terminals at least 3 times with a screwdriver while holding the handle only to prevent a horrible shock.
Once the diode terminal is disconnected from the HV Cap read resistance in BOTH directions by reversing the test leads on the terminals of the diode. One direction will read resistance and the other direction it will read open / infinity. Any other reading is a failed diode.

You check the capacitor using an analog (scaled vs digital display) ohm meter on R X 1,000 or R X 10,000 and watch for a jump on the meter just as you touch the terminals EACH time you reverse the leads. No jump or... steady resistance = bad Cap.

Sharp Capacitors can be found here:
http://www.repairclinic.com/Sharp-Microwave-Parts?s=t-FH-DZA119WRKZ-%3d%3db113a6c12

Just note that either a CAP or Diode failure can cause the main fuse to blow at the end of the power cord in the fuse holder.

Fuses are normally either 15 or 20 A Slo-Blo fuses and can be found here:

Whirlpool portable AC, compressor works, but no exhaust fan

there are 3 possiblities
  1. something obstructing the lower fan motor (or exhaust motor)
  2. bad fan capacitor
  3. or bad motor
to check any of these you will need to disassemble the unit to get to the blower. there are several screws located at various points on the plastic housing covering the unit. Once removed you should be able to check for motor obstructions visually. for checking the motor and capacitor you will need a volt/ohm meter and ideally a capacitor checker. you could try to spin start the motor while it is powered up this could be a possible sign of a bad capacitor if it will start when you do this or if the motor will spin freely while powered down and will not spin start when powered up. I know that is kind of confusing but its how they work. GO FIGURE.  thanks Peyton

I have a simple stereo speaker from Radio Shack. Small metal case with two wire input latches. Each box has two speakers in side. Both speakers boxes went out at the same time. I wasn't there when this...

You need to measure across the speakers themselves n ot the crossover (cap). If these are 8 ohm speakers, an ohm meter will read about 6 or so. That is because both impedence and resistance use the same measurement. With an ohm meter you are measuring resistance. The speakers are rated using impedence.

If both speakers are open (measure infinity), I would suspect a problem with the stereo that caused them to go open. With the stereo on and playing something (radio,cd , or whatever) use a DC voltmeter to measure between the speaker terminals (Red/Black). You should read essentially 0 no matter what the volume. If you read any DC more than 3/4 V, the problem is with the amp section of the stereo.
