Question about Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18.1" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

1800FP power supply

I suspect my power supply also went bad. Using an Ohm meter I found 3 capacitors with infinite resistance, but I do not know if this means they are necessarily bad and leaking. I want to test the ICE chip, since this is the most common problem of these power supplies, but I do not know how. If this post could be directed to RoboTech, who seems the most experienced on this issue, it would be much appreciated.

I am unable to find a schematic (if you sent a link to one that would be great), but I have identified the chip on the board. What voltage or resistance properties are typically altered in a bad chip? Also, I am still wondering if capacitor leaks are possibly the real issue.

Several month ago I replaced this chip. Bought it on ebay for a couple of bucks. To prevent the chip from going bad you need to re-solder some diode connections.

    Seller:

resurrectekHe sent good instructions on the chip and mentioned how to prevent the chip from going bad again.

8 pin IC chip will not "pulse" to tell the main IC that the power pack is ok , replace this and the monitor will power back up
I believe the IC begins with an A it is a small bugger right in the middle part of the power pack. I am typing this note on one I repaired last week.
Good luck

The best way to get this to Robotek is to go to the home page and select find experts. Locate his name and use the ASK ME option. I will forward the link for this string to him as well.

Hi Sulli
I is likely that you wont need a circuit diagram to fault find the power supply. Switch mode supplies are difficult to diagnose as they either work or they dont, making them hard to diagnose Experience and information are your best assets here. Testing an integrated circuit can be even harder. Replace the device and see. This is how we do it in the real world. The capacitors you mentioned as having infinite resistance. This is generally ok if you are just looking for shorts. A capacitance meter should be used to check if they cap is actually functioning to spec. If you are unsure, just replace them, they cost a few cents. There is a company that sell reworked power supplies here. Or do a search on ebay, to locate the chip, or new power supply.
I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have aboutit, please get back to me here, or use the ASK function to go straightto me :) If you are still unsure, have problems, or we need to look atthe situation more deeply, then before you give a rating for thisadvice, hit the ASK buttonThanks for using FixYa, If you consider the advice I have given you assound, a FixYa rating is a great reward for my efforts to help you.Cheers.

My ASUS VH232H wont turn on, it was working just fine, I tried another power cord that I know is ok & still no power

Chances are the internal power supply has gone bad :^(
If you are capable, you might want to open the monitor and see if there is a fuse and if it is bad (open). If there is a fuse, chances are it is soldered in so ..... you would need soldering skills to replace. You would also need a ohm meter (multi-meter) to test the fuse. Should have zero resistance. High resistance will indicate an open fuse.

Best of luck, Jim

Dell 1800fq LCDcomputer monitor not coming up

More likely to have shorted out SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY IC, very common in this power supply. You can replace the power supply or buy a repair kit for this power supply on EBAY.
You should at least finr out if your are getting the 12vdc at the power supply output connector.

Instead of replacing the Capacitors may be is better to check the the amount of current by loading each one of the capacitors. In my dell E193Fpc the capacitors don't look swollen. The question is what is...

That will take more time than repalcing the caps, bad caps can have high ESR, to measure current discharge during the AC discharge cycle of 50~100KHz each power supply will be real hard unless you have very low Z AC amp meter that has frequency response higher than 100KHz and not introduce resistance in series with the cap, if you look at the rating of ESR (PANASONIC fm/fc series cap made for switching power supply, it is in milli Ohm range. Better off replaceing 50 cents parts or use good cap meter that can do leakage, ESR, capacitance test if you want to analyze the caps, shop time will be too expensive. Just my 2cents adn 30 years of experience.

I own a XG-91D monitor that the screen goes black after about 5 seconds. I found 2-470uF 25V capacitors on the power supply board that were leaky - replaced them but the problem still persists. There...

Hello,

Replace thee 1000uf caps too. A capacitor meter will not test the ESR ( equivalent series resistance ) of the caps the cap meter will show them to be good but an ESR meter will show then to be bad. Also be sure to use low ESR caps. If you use general purpose aps like from Radio Shack it can damage the board board because of the ESR rating. The temp rating needs to be 105c or the new caps will blow out within a month because of the heat in the monitor case ( No fans ).

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

hi, i repair these monitors regularly, capacitors you test, are they close to a block of transistors? the four plugs you speak of are the backlamp connectors. two things, the backlamps could be shorted due to rubbed wire insulation near where they disappear into the screen. second, more likely cause. the block of trasnsitors right next to the high voltage plugs. they are NPN power transistors. it's been so long, but i think they are labeled C5404, don't quote me on that, but they are likey bad and what maybe causing the funny readings on the capacitors. i have never purchased an oscilliscope to test properly, but the DMM ohm readings should show about 3.5 K ohms from end terminal to end terminal(three pin transistors, outside pins, both) when i found ones that were not high in resistance, i junked em. but be careful to only test the one labeled beginning with C, if you find other transistors on the board away from the high voltage block, they are not the same, likely mosfet PNP type and if you test, you may short with DMM. don't worry about capacitors ohm reading, only if they have blown tops of course. most of the time, if i really suspect a bad cap., and if it doesn't have blown top, i will charge with 12 volt power and then check draw resistance dicharging to ground with ohm meter. good luck, hope i helped some.

Its probably the inverter that lights up the screen that went bad.I have replaced inverter before with much sucess. If you feel comfortable opening the unit up I found one on ebay. Here is the link.
