Question about Zeiss Classic 524006 Binocular

1 Answer

My binoculars are Zeiss 8 x 30 Jenoptem purchased new in 1972 £24.99 retail. Still in excellent condition until I dropped them on the carpet a few days ago. I now cannot focus them properly resulting in double vision. I need to know where to get them repaired. I live near Leeds, West Yorkshire.

In the UK your best bet would be to send them to Kay Optical. They have an enviable reputation in repairing binoculars. Another place in the UK is Cley Spy in Norfolk who also have much experience with older optics.

Sorry neither is too close to you.

What does 'jenoptum' mean?

Thanks for the research op ... interesting ... ok ... check link below ... http://www.holgermerlitz.de/seven8x30.html
"Jenoptem" is the name given to a civilian version of the Zeiss Jena Deltrentis 8x30 binocular of Porro prism design

Jena, Germany ... incidentally is where Carl Zeiss AG was founded (1846)

Made a leap of faith with regards to spelling "Jenoptem" vs. "Jenoptum".

Hi, I have fungus inside the ocular of my Zeiss Jenoptem 10x50 binoculars. How should I open the binoculars in order to clean the fungus? Thank you!

It is possible for someone to disassemble binoculars to clean etc. But if you are not experienced, there is a high chance it will be out of focus once you assemble it. The vision might even become blurry.
So I advise you to get it serviced by a professional.

My zeiss binoculars have been droped and now iam getting double vision

You will need to send them off to Zeiss. The Conquest series are Nitrogen filled and sealed. It is not something the local optical shop can fix readily. Warranty wouldn't cover dropping them.

Jenoptem alignment- how to get the images to line up in each ocular

Unfortunately if they are out of alignment you need to take them to a service center. It can't really be fixed at home without a device known as a collimator. Binoculars can fall out of collimation if they have been knocked or dropped. Jenoptems were made by the defunct East German Carl Zeiss Jena. Zeiss was split in two after WW2 with Jena being on the east. The current Zeiss firm is the West German company. Zeiss Jena ceased to be after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is unlikely that the current firm would fix these for you. If they did the price would be greater than several pairs of Jenoptems.

Before you do take them check to see if they have a seven digit serial number. If it is six digits they are fake Jenoptems. There were many fake Jenoptems sold in the eighties by UK dealers. There is even a myth that they were made under licence in Japan. A myth is all that information is. There is no documentation to substantiate this and was probably spread by sellers trying to legitimise an inferior product.
