Not for sure what you have, but if you just purchased the house, there might be air in the gas lines. If it sat vacant and the gas was off, or if they has swapped meters/worked on gas lines? Try cycling the fireplace several times. Or look around for a small door opening or if it's mounted to the exterior wall, look outside for the supply line in. If you do find a valve in the closed position, be aware of the fact that it may be off due to a reason, and you may want a plumber/fire place tech to service it.

I also have a Marco fireplace with what sounds like the same setup as you. I've been digging for an owners manual myself for allowed clearances around the fireplace for wood mantles and such.
If the fireplace has a key valve it DOES NOT have a pilot. My fireplace has gas logs in it and I simply light a long match (or use one of those long necked stove lighting wands) stick it between the logs and turn on the gas. Make sure that the match doesn't extinguish as you poke it in between the logs (it may take 4-5 seconds before the gas lights up.) Also make sure that your flue is all the way open when using gas as your fuel.
Good luck!

I looked up regular electral diagram for the different elements.
SOURCE: Marco fireplace Model 794 cant light the pilot
the valve handle is on when the handle is in line with valve body, off when crossed...are you pushing in on the pilot gas valve under unit? if not.. open bottom panel.. turn knob to pilot..push and hold down while sparking..if pilot lights continue to hold for about 60 secounds.. then release knob and turn to on! Also FYI... these units have a vent recall on them! please go to google and type in your heater, then model #

Therinnaiguy - Thanks for the response and I have a follow up comment adn question.
I'm having a similar problem with a Heat'n'Glo fireplace in a new house I just bought. Fireplace lights but goes out after 10-15 seconds .. and yes I think on mine the flames do go all blue and lift up as it extinguishes from right to left.
My fireplace has the Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) so there is no pilot light. Besides the igniter connecting to the DSI module below, there are not any other sensors connected (unless there well hidden or one is wrapped in the igniter).
The LED on the DSI module blinks fast when turned on, which indicated "Normal Operation. Call for Heat." Before all the flames go out I can hear the igniter try to relight a few more times.
Any additional thougths on the problems? What should I do to ensure that the vents are not plugged or anything?
