The proublem is likely to be driver based, depending on how old the laptop is and the os version ie lepard 9 (this is an example I am not sure which versions of the os the camera is compatible with) you may not be able to get the camera working properly.
Regardless of if the camera says its compatiple try the following.
Try doing the following 1: Try using a compact card reader to see if the files can be transfered onto the computer this way.
2: If the camera is not picking up the files there is a good chance your husband is shooting in raw mode, as such there canon may offer a raw program editor or a pluding / update for the os which would allow you view access or modify the files. Alternitiverly install a trial for the latest version of a package of Adobe Light room of Adobe photoshop, as these packeges have support for the raw files inbuild, and can be used to import photos onto computers.
Alternitverly if you can not find away of using the raw files buy a new compact flash card and shoot in jpg till the computer is back up and running.

On every device, PC, laptop, tablet or phone you need a program to transfer files to and from. The device has to recognise the device that is connected. It also needs instructions what to do.
On the PC, you also need a driver for the connected hardware, And if you want to move files (Pictures are files too) you need a transfer program. Most camera's do have a CD, with the needed software for Windows and Mac. Phones and Tablets need an App. Most transfer and phone view apps are free. And yes there are also apps you can buy, but even for Apple you can get photo (transfer and view) apps for free.
If you have an Android, goto the Google store and search for a free photo app and install it. (Snapseed is great and free)
Canon has four tilt-shift lenses ranging in focal length from 17mm to 90mm and in price from $1400 to $2500. Which one would be best for him would be up to him. You'll have to subtly ask him which one he might want to try. That's assuming you really mean a tilt-shift lens, given the price. They're definitely professional-grade lenses You might want to consider something like a Lensbaby Composer Pro instead, for $300 or $400.
In the camera menu is an entry for "copy". This gives you the option to copy the internal memory to a memory card.
You do not need to buy Photoshop unless you are an advanced photographer who spends 6 or 7 hours a day editing photos. Besides, it costs over $800. You could try Photoshop Elements...it's only $99. Or, you could try some less expensive or even free photo editing software. It all depends on how serious you want to get into photo editing.
Just use a CARD READER to fast transfer of pictures into your computer. I am also using Canon A470 . that is not having this problem but it's taking too much time when we transfer pictures via data cable .

Can you take a picture and it looks good when you transfer it to your computer? Is that what you meant? Can you see the menus, or do you see nothing at all on the screen at any time?
Its possible your camera is in a 'power save' mode and the LCD is turned off to save battery power. Try pressing the "Disp" button once and see if it turns on. If not, press it again... did it turn on? This happens to a lot of people.
If that is not the solution, then please contact me and let me know.

After a couple years of use, neither of my computers will recognize my G6. This is the second G6 I've had with this problem. Canon replaced the first camera with a new one. I have just returned from a trip, and don't know how to get the photos transferred, before I send it back to Canon. Would appreciate any helpful information. Thanks.
