Question about HP Photosmart C6180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Magenta cartridges not working

In trying to print labels, I believe the printer "ate" one and then I had an error (didn't write the # down), the printer made terrible noises and then the magenta cartridges did not work after this. All the other colors, including black, work fine, but of course no combos using magenta are printing, so unable to print in red, etc.

I tried all the resetting/reinitializing methods, but no solution has worked. Please help!

Sorry, your answer was way too basic. Yes, I've done both of these things. I need a more in-depth/complex answer to my problem.

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

As stated, all colors (including black) seem to be working just fine. I've changed out cartridges, done a reset, etc and nothing seems to work. I definitely need EXPERT help. Thanks.

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

Yes, I've done a head cleaning through the software. This still does not solve the "magenta not working" problem. I'm totally baffled.

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

I've done all the major steps suggested by HP, which includes the 'print head cleaning' as well.
I truly need a more complex solution to this issue of 'magenta not working'. Thanks anyway.

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

Is there a way to open up the printer and take a look inside? I need to find what happened during the 'original issue' of the printer possibly eating a clear label.
After this happened, I was no longer able to print with the magenta colors (I was using red on my document at the time of the 'original issue').

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

I have a MAC computer. I just cleaned the print heads (before you posted your possible solution) by accessing the HP software. This is the second time I've done this and IT STILL DOES NOT FIX MY PROBLEM. Thanks for trying, though.

My issue is rather complex, I believe.

  • Kolina Jul 02, 2008

I feel that due to a malfunction when printing labels (jam and/or 'eaten' label) it has somehow caused the magenta cartridges to quit working. I have replaced these, cleaned contacts, done a software cleaning, done a reset, etc. I am still able to print documents, but color mixing using red is simply not working. I only have black, yellow and blue that work, but nothing in the red family is working at all.

  • Kolina Jul 03, 2008

Still needing help with how to repair magenta ink cartridges and/or printer. (All other colors, including black, are working fine). Problem happened when I was trying to print labels and the printer somehow "ate" one - as far as I can tell. Then some horrible noises came from printer and then magenta quick working.

  • Kolina Jul 03, 2008

    1. Where is the mylar ribbon cable located?
    2. How do I access it? I would need specific instructions in how to disassemble the printer.

  • Kolina Jul 10, 2008

I took the printer in to have it repaired, but they could not find the 'eaten' label and as far as they could see, the Mylar ribbon cable was intact. Is there any other solution to try to get the magenta cartridges to work once again . . . short of sending it to HP? I'd appreciate any expert input/solution!

  • Kolina Jul 10, 2008

Actually, I couldn't find the printer cartridge if it hit me in the face . . . the reason being is that I'm unable to access anything easily with this printer without probably tearing it all apart, which truthfully scares me to death. This printer is a real pain!

    Thanks, anyway.

  • Kolina Jul 10, 2008

oops! I meant print carriage, not print cartridge. Sorry.

In my opinion your printer is broken if you've done all the cleaning/reset steps. Have you checked in the print cartridge carriage for you missing label, it may be covering up the magenta print head, but if this were the case then you would probably have an awful mess of magenta ink everywhere.

It could be that the trailing cable that goes from the carriage to the engine board has come loose causing the magenta signal to be lost. Hopefully the cable is not ripped but just came out of its connector. You might be able to check it without taking the printer apart but it might be hard to see. Taking the printer apart is possible with some trial and error, there really isn't instruction readily available to do so. I suggest taking a lot of digital pictures while you take it apart so you can refer to them when putting it back togerther.

You say you checked the contacts? Did you check the ones in the print carriage. If there is something blocking the contacts in the magenta compartment then the cartridge might not be getting a signal. I suggest cleaning it with a cotton swab and some Isopropyl Alcohol then cleaning it with the eraser from a pencil.

If the cable checks out and the contact are clean then I'm afraid there has been an electronics fault on the engine board. The C6280 is the current equivalent printer and retails for about $180 so having your C6180 repaired probably isn't a good value.

Just for the future, never reuse a sheets of sticker labels if you've already removed some of the labels, always use a fresh sheet, this helps avoid labels getting peeled off in the printer.

As you stated, there was a terrible noise and then the magenta failed to print. I would check the mylar ribbon cable for any damage. especially since it could have torn or been damaged. the ribbon cable is responsible for the signal for magenta to print. it more than likely is either the cable or the seating where the cable terminates on either side.

If problem continuous take it to an authorized service station to estimate repair cost.
Unfortunately as i know buying a new printer may be not more expensive than repairing or replacing printheads

Try to clean your printheads or check the level of your inks, maybe you are low inks and try replacing them with genuine HP ink cartridges not the generic one .
If the print defect is minor,it might be caused by reserve mode operation .When the printers runs out of some colors ,it can continue printing using remaining inks ,but prints quality may be affected .If cyan, magenta or yellow is out the printer can print only in grayscale.
Replace any empty print cartridges .To check ink levels
follow the steps below;
1. press the SETUP button.
2. press the down arrow button until TOOLS is highlighted.
3. press OK.
4. the display ink guage selection should be highlighted .PRESS OK and the ink gauge will display.

or try to calibrate the colors;

1.open the printer TOOLBOX.
*open HP SOLUTION CENTER( click START,then ALL PROGRAMS,then HP SOLUTION CENTER)
*if you have more than one printer installed ,make sure to select the correct printer tab in HP SOLUTION CENTER.
*click settings
*click PRINT SETTINGS..
*click PRINTER TOOLBOX

2.on the DEVICE SERVICES tab click CLEAN THE PRINT CARTRIDGES,and then follow the onscreen instruction three levels of cleaning are available

My son-in-law is a computer and cash register repairman. He checked my printer out and thinks that I have a bad charging device problem. Black print works great, but colors just will not work. Blue toner...

The error code 10.0002 is a problem with the magenta cartridge. To be precise it is a e-label error.
The e-label is a small circuit board on each of the cartridges.
Pull the magenta cartridge and clean it.
Now as to the ETB (that's the big mylar sheet with the cyan toner all over it). Get rid of the cyan cartridge, it's obviously dumping toner. Remove all the cartridges and the ETB, and vacuum out the printer...with power off.
Power the printer on and when it comes ready
1. press the select button(check mark)
2. press the - and the 'cancel job' button together (at the same time). release both
3. press the select button. You now should be in the 'secondary menu'.
4. press either left or right arrow buttons to navigate.
5. navigate to CLEAN ETB
6. press select(check mark) and let the machine do its' thing.

Good Luck

Do get rid of the cyan and probably the magenta.

Printer error code 5952 - ?

From the service manual:

An error occurred with the magenta printcartridge drive motor during startup or rotation.

To fix:

1. Check that connectors J5003 on the magenta print-cartridge drive motor and J207 on the DC controller are seated correctly. If they are then:
2. Replace the magenta print-cartridge drive motor. If that doesn't work then:
3. Replace the DC controller.

Wont print with all new ink cartridges

If the error message is only "magenta/cyan low", it doesn't cause any error. The low message stays after replacing ink cartridges if they're replaced too early (before they're indicated as actually empty), it doesn't cause the printer to not work.
However, some other problem might be faulty, or there might be another error message. Try emptying printer queue and print from Ink Management -> Menu/set (twice) to check wether the problem is with communication from pc or if the printer actually is unable to print.

Dell 920 printer won't print magenta.

There are chances the magenta ink got over or its dried :
# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer. try this if this did then heat the cart cartridges walls with hair dryer for 2 min then insert it back and check if it works:
