Re: GARMIN i3 updates
You need to obtain the proper USB cable to fit the small "USB Mini-B" connector on the upper-right side of the unit. This is a standard type connection, you may already have one for a digital camera or MP3 player. If not, they are available at Radio Shack or WalMart.
Once connected... (hoping you have Win XP or higher)
Then visit here to see if map updates are available.
Then visit here to see if other unit software updates are available.
There you will find a link to download WebUpdater - the all-Garmin product automatic update utility... it's simple, and powerful.

The manufacturer offers updates at their website. Here is the link for the update page: http://www8.garmin.com/updatemaps/
You'll need to plug your Nuvi into your PC (it uses a mini-USB to USB data cable), and the website detects which unit you have and which updates are available for it. You'll have to download "MyGarmin Agent" and/or Garmin's Communicator Plugin first, if you don't already have them installed on your computer. It's a good idea to have a MicroSD card plugged into your Nuvi before connecting it to your PC (The Nuvi and the memory card each show up as removable drives in My Computer). Otherwise, if the unit is too low on memory when you attempt to update, you'll either have to get a MicroSD card to expand the available memory, or deal with reduced map data coverage.
Unfortunately, I don't believe the updates are going to be free for you -- Garmin has very specific conditions in order to qualify for an update at no charge. Don't quote me on that, though.... Not knowing all the specifics on your unit or it's purchase, I can't say for sure. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.
Garmin allows you one free update for your maps as long as you do it within 60 days of your day of purchase. You have to download it with your computer and then use the USB cable that should have come with your receiver to transfer the update to your GPS. After the initial free update the charge is $100.00 per year or $200.00 for lifetime updates.
You can purchase map updates from stores that sell the units, or new this year you can buy updates for the life of your unit from the Garmin website which cost $120. You can get up to 4 updates per year. If you wish you can just purchase a single update for $70.
I have a Garmin as well. Updating your map is super easy. Just go to https://my.garmin.com/maps/updates.htm and enter your serial number. They will then provide you with a link to download new maps and instruction on how to install them.
Hope this helps!

GARMIN offers a free download called "WebUpdater" for these products. Once you have the GARMIN USB driver for this unit installed on your computer (also avail. at GARMIN.com), you can run the WebUpdater, and it will update all known updates to the unit.
You will have to buy a regular copy of Mapsource NT (do not buy the update version). The regular copy will come with a serial number and then you will have to register with www.garmin.com to get the unlock code. Also you will need the unit serial number on your i3, (it can be found by removing the battery cover).
