Colour on glossy paper

After printing fine for a few years, my i965 suddenly prints everything pink on glossy paper. Prints fine on plain paper. Have tried reinstalling driver and cleaning makes no difference.

The printer is about 5 years old and out of warranty. I use new cartridges, not refilled, but generic ones not Canon.

  • chrishiller Jul 02, 2008

If I change the settings to glossy paper everything is pink whether I put in glossy paper or plain paper.
If I change the settings to plain paper, everything is pink if I put in glossy paper but the colours are OK if I put in plain paper.

Replacing the generic cartridges with genuine Canon ones had done the trick. This is a bit surprising since the printer has worked fine for 5 years with generic cartridges. Many thanks.

First thing, use original Canon cartridges. that could be the source of your issue, as these days, printer companies resort to these kinda tricks to ensure that the customer only buys their products.

Next, make sure that you have selected the proper paper type and output quality under printer properties.

Should this not work, please post back so that we can assist you further. But remember, try with the original inks first, and not refilled or generic cartridges.

First try printing using the canon supplied"easy print" software ,this bypasses the printer driver totally (that's what canon told ) and any driver settings you may have changed,.If it still prints pinkish you probably need a custom profile.I got one from the below site using ilfords classic pearl paper and the result is ok..

The driver is the one that handles the interpretation of data being transferred to the printer. If you are printing correctly when the plain paper option is selected and its messed up when you select the glossy option, the driver may be corrupted, uninstall then reinstall the driver....

If your printer is printing ok on regular copy paper, than your printer is probably working normally. Printers simply receive the DATA from a Computer System, that tells it what to print. A printer cannot tell the difference between papers. Thicker stock may have problems feeding thru the printer and you may even have to adjust the paper lever from "O" to "+", to accomadate the thicker paper/stock, but even that adjustment does not change how the printer prints, it simply moves the Printhead Assembly further away from the thicker paper. If your printer works ok on plain paper, than I would guess that some setting in your computer system/software program [that you were printing from], may have got changed. You might try printing on the glossy paper using a different software program.
try to clean the head properly also if any upgrade is available download it

Are you using refilled or custom carts on the printer?

Do you still have warranty on this printer - I would have it checked, check with your dealer or canon.

Sorry I missed your few years part - your printer head may be failing, service most likely required, have it checked by a local repair man.

Canon i965 printer

First ensure it is not a cartridge problem, try a replacement.
It does not look like a print head problem, it can be a driver problem or a logic fault in the printer.

Printer does not print documents. Model IP3000 pixma. Approx 3 years old, used in my classroom. Printer has been working well until this morning. This is a sudden failure. Performed all maintainence with...

I had this very same ongoing problem with my iP3000 and recently with my iX4000 but I refused to believe it was the printheads as the iP3000 would print cd/dvd discs without a problem. Colour on paper was always there even though I used Calidad tanks.

My solution, or more aptly, my workaround was to change the paper setting from Plain paper to Glossy paper but still using plain paper and low and behold, after nine months of test pages with only the Windows logo it stated printing black text again albeit slowly now. Same deal for the iX4000, it started printing black text on plain paper as well after 4 weeks when the problem first occurred

I also did all the maintenance rigmarole over and over etc...with no results. My printers are hooked up to two PC's, Vista and XP so maybe I eventually scrambled the printers barins or something, anyway I'm printing again.

Worth a try and nothing to lose

Black colour ?

Thats because it's using the other colours to mix what it thinks to be shades of grey. Due to the black ink being pigment based and the colours inks dye base, when printing onto glossy paper the machine will use the colour dye based inks to make up black.
If you were to print on plain paper, set to greyscale, then the machine will just use the black as the pigment ink sits onto of the plain paper and will not run should the paper get wet.  With glossy paper the ink has to be absorbed into the paper ad the Black pigment ink will not do this so the machine will use the coloured inks.

Sucks but true.

My canon i960 is printing only green

I had this problem. If I tried to print a black& white photo on to glossy paper, it would only print green. When I tried on to plain paper using the 'fast' option, it printed in black. The reason for this is, on plain paper it uses the black cartridge, but output to glossy photo paper using the 'high' option, uses the mix of colours in your colour cartridge. If one or more of your colours has run out, you will get a print with the ink left in the cartridge. Replace the cartridge or refill it & your problem is solved.
