It could be a faulty battery. Remove the battery & try to power up the laptop.
If the laptop did not power up after removing the battery, then notice the power receptacle where you plug the power adapter's cord to the laptop. While plugging the power cord in, notice if there is a spark occurring at the power receptacle. If the spark occurs, then disconnect internal drives & connectors one at a time until subsystem with short is identified. If power input still a short with bare motherboard, replace the motherboard. If the spark did not occur, then inspect the boards for burnt or melted components, cold solder on DC jack, open connections, or unseated cards.
