I'm a tech and I see this often. I don't have an answer, but it happens with al of the HP printers that use the 02 cartridge. It doesn't matter if they are HP brand or refilled cartridges. If you have a solution, I'd like to know it. Nick

Three C6180s at my office have developed the same problem at about the same time. 12Kevin

Nick, I have the same problem. I replaced it with the 02 cartridge a Magenta (original) and the same problem exists. For just 1 empty cartridge, the stupid HP stops all functions.

Similar issue here... C6180 suddenly stopped printing black. Cartridge still shows 60% or so, but would not print or copy in black... Changed cartridge, attempted again, no luck. Returned and tried ANOTHER black cartidge which printer knows is full, but will still NOT print black at all. Diagnostic pages print a purplish black, but where the text is supposed to be real true black it prints a VERY fine grayish color.

These are great units when working, but it seems like HP needs to do something about these models OTHER than discontinue them. Class-action, anyone?

Have c6180 bought last fall (Sept 07) black stopped printing in Feb. 08. got a free replacement under warranty. Now this one won't print in black, have also tried everything requested I do by H/P support. Like the unit but this problem should be addressed by H/P, too many people having the same problem.

There is a fundamental problem with my machine, quite suddenly it will not print with the black cartridge despite changing the cartridge many times! even a brand new cartridge will not print.(The colours are fine)

I have contacted HP and although the the machine is only just out of warranty they advised me a 3 staged troubleshooting plan which did not solve the problem.I am now at the stage of putting a hammer through it,its that frustrating.can anyone help?

I found the same thing today. Talked to HP and they offered an upgrade for $250 saying that there was a hardware problem and could not fix it. This is not right. What is HP playing at..

Black ink will not print but colors do

Most likely culprit is a dried up ink within the nozzles themselves. The best things for getting rid of dried ink in the nozzles is to use either a standard bathroom cleaner or rubbing alcohol. With the printer on open the door as if you were replacing ink. With the ink cartidges visable, unplug the printer so they stay put. Remove the cartridge and spray the cleaner in the where the ink is taking from the cartridge and clean it with whatever works. I really really good trick is if you have an old cartridge you can use a syringe to fill up the empty cartridge with your cleaning solution or rubbing alcohol. Insert the cartridge and run some test prints. This will for sure run the cleaner through the nozzle and hopefully dissolve the blockage.

New cartidge now printing light. Also message states cartridge alignment fails. Please help. Thanks, John

What you could try is to do a Clean the Print Cartridges operation. This process will clean the cartridge printhead and will print a better alignment page.

C6180 failed alignment test, will not print color properly

All colors need to be present to pass alignment. Usually what I see is the yellow is empty. You can blot the print cartridge on a damp paper towel to verify the inks are working and this also cleans the head.

Photosmart C6180 will not print in black ink. Have all HP genuine cartridges, although I have used cheaper imitations in the past. Have tried aligning print heads, cleaning, master reset (# & 6...

do not print the printout from the pc.tyr to print a test copy by pressing the menu button on the printer and in that select the option print a self test.then press OK.if the test copy from printer gives proper black colour then its the print setting problem in the pc.just adjust that setting.but if the test page does not print any black line or object that means the cartridge is out of ink and needs replacement.
