If you or somebody else had used the bobbin retreading function and forgot to disengage the bobbin retreader, the handle will not moved.

This is a simple solution, just disengage the bobbin retreader and it will be OK.

Otherwise it could be a jammed bobbin or any other mechanical part or simple no current is passing thorough the machine.

My Wife has the same sewing machine and exactly the same thingvhappend to it. I took it apart and the bearings on the main drive have seized up. The machine will work for 10mins or so and then it will seize up. There is no point trying to lubricate the bearings now (they looked as though they hadn't been lubricated when it left the factory) as the damage has been done.

I have been looking for parts for this machine, but it seems like they are not available. Incedently, reviews of this machine are pretty bad.
I guess, I am going to have to buy a new sewing machine for her.

I have a lumina overlocker. It stopped working mid stitch with the needles just touching the fabric so I couldn't pull my work out. The handwheel turns and the motor is going, but the needles are not...

Sounds like a jam. Cut the threads before the eyes of the needle, and if you can get in to cut the looper threads just before they leave the loopers, that should help. Loosen the needle screws and try to rock the handwheel so you can get the fabric off. Clean the machine, install new needles, rethread, and you should be good to go.

My Designer 1 sewing machine runs great, but it sound terrible. It always sounds like rattling from the bobbin area. What can be done? I take it for cleans and mention this, but nothing changes.

When the needle moves down, is it striking the edge of the needle plate? If so, adjustment is needed. Take the various parts of the bobbin assembly out of the machine and use the handwheel to move the needle in the downward direction (turn the handwheel counterclockwise). Is the needle striking the "hook" in its downward most position? If so, this is most likely what's making the noise and it needs adjustment.

Timing a bernina

Well a simple way to check timing (it's not foolproof) is to push the needle bar fully to the right. Drop the bobbin door, take the bobbin case out and tip the machine back slightly so you can see the hook/shuttle area. Rotate the handwheel until the needle goes down through the stitch plate and just starts to come back up ... stop. Now release the hook retainer by pressing the release lever on the left of the bobbin door and open the retainer carefully, leaving the hook/shuttle in place. Watch carefully at the top of the hook, whilst you continue to rotate the handwheel towards you - you'll see the point of the hook move clockwise behind the needle. Stop when the point of the hook just emerges from behind the needle - it should be just above the eye of the needle - if not, the timing may be out (the needle might also be at the wrong depth too, so this isn't foolproof) - this is the only check you can do without special 'pinning tools' that are used to set various parts of the machine into specific positions for adjusting the timing. Shout if you need more advice.

My needle does not go up and down.

You need to check the needle bar first of all to see if you can move it up and down by hand, if you can then the screw on the needle bar may have come loose, or the very worst situation could be a broken takeup lever

Needle does not move

I'm not sure about this particular machine but bump the bobbinwinder over, it should move one way or the other. Also there is a knob on the side on the inside of the handwheel. This is probably loose and you need to hand tighten it a bit. When this is loose it disengages the handwheel from the shaft so your needlebar won't go up and down while you wind a bobbin.
Hope thats it. Good luck.

Belts intact, press on pedal, motion in belts, but not on needle end

does the needle go up and down when you turn the handwheel by hand? if so, one of the belts may be slipping - tighten it enough to make it grab.

if the handwheel does not make the needle go up and down, is the handwheel lock for bobbin winding un-locked? if so tighten the handwheel lock inside the handwheel. if the handwheel lock is tightened and the handwheel spins when motor runs the handwheel lock is asembled incorrectly. if this is the case, undo screw in handwhhel lock nut and spin lock nut off machine, then remove pronged washer and turn 1/3 turn and re-install.

Needle wont go up or down

If the Handwheel (big knob) is moving but the needle is not moving, you need to engage the clutch ........depending on the model

- push handwheel in to engage, pull out to disengage
or
- if there is a smaller wheel inside the handwheel, tighten to engage, loosen to release.

BUT if all is jammed........

Check for threads that are jamming the motion of the hook around where the bobbin case is

If your bobbin goes in from the top, remove the needleplate and bobbincase remove thread jams by gently rocking handwheel back and forth until released.

Clean around the hook race with a rag moistened with methylated spirit, surgical spirit or similar, then reassemble.

If front loading, open the door for bobbin case area, release 2 retaining clips holding the collar on (take note of the position/orientation for when you re-assemble....even take a digi photo to refer to !?!).....
......then just do jam removal & clean out in much the same way as for the top loader.

In all cases, don't force too much or be too brutal, gentle and patient works best, try to judge where the jam is caught and work with it slowly......you may need to cut jammed threads, just ensure all are removed before you re-assemble.
