Troubleshooting defrost system failure on Amana Fridge

Hello all,

I have an Amana SXD27TW (P1302801WW) side by side that I use as a beer fridge/extra freezer in the garage. It stopped cooling properly (both fans running fine) and I noticed significant frost buildup on the freezer wall and once removed, the coils. I defrosted it manually and it now it is working fine again. So clearly, it is a defrosting issue. I know that there are the 3 parts to check (plus the wiring). I also determined that my fridge has an adaptive timer board not a mechanical timer. Last night, I took my multimeter and testing continuity through the cold thermostat (attached to the coils) and the element itself. Both beeped properly indicating continuity. So, I assume the next step is to test the adaptive timer board. Per the sticker on it, it says to open and close the door (either one) 4 times in 8 seconds. I tried repeatedly but nothing occurred at all when I did so. No clicking that I could hear and definitely no shut off of the fans/cooling. The fridge/freezer were at normal (cold) operating temp at the time of this test. Does this conclusively confirm that the problem is the board or is there some other testing that I should do before ordering a new one? Thanks!

Thanks for the response. Is just testing continuity the best I can to do to exclude the element and thermostat or should be doing something else too?

When you say turn off the thermostat off, are you talking about disconnecting the defrost thermostat or the fridge temp controls? What will this action tell us?

Thanks again for taking the time.

oh, and is a failed control board common? Seems weird that a simple board like this would fail all of sudden without moving the fridge or something else.

Replaced adaptive defrost control board (timer) tonight and defrost cycle started properly after 4 taps of the light switch. Problem was definitely the board and now it is fixed. Thanks all!

YES YOU GOT IT,IT'S THE BOARD BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE CHECKED OUT GOOD,BOTH FANS,HEATING ELEMENT,DEFROST THERMOSTAT,THE ONLY OTHER THING I WOULD DO IS TURN THE THERMOSTAT OFF IN THE FRIG.TO SEE IF THE COMPRESSOR AND FANS TURN OFF,WAIT 3 MINUTES AND TURN IT BACK ON, IF THAT CHECKS OUT THEN IT HAS TO BE THE DEFROST TIMER,LET ME KNOW-MIKE

Amana fridge is not cold

Its defrost problem, the freezer should cool, then freeze, then defrost cycle should start. In your case freezer is cooling, then freezing, but its not defrosting. That's why fridge section is not cooling.-------

I have a norge side by side fridge and the fridge side is warm while the freezer is good

Hello,

The leading cause of that is a failure of one of the components of the defrost system. Do you see frost build up on the back wall of the freezer??
This tip i wrote covers the components of the defrost system and how to check them. http://www.fixya.com/support/r10097882-wrong_when_freezer_frosted_refrig_warm

Hi there.I have an Amana Side by Side Refridgerator. We are having a problem with the fridge side not cooling enough. The Freezer side is working well.Have you any tips on how to fix it myself ?Cheers.

Check fan which blows cool to fridge compartment is working. Check fridge is defrosted automatically. If not do it manually and check, there will be cooling in fridge compartment. Over frosting will cover up the fan throw behind the freezer. If not auto defrost works, switch off and restart after 5 minutes. Still auto defrost problem, do it manually or replace board.

Hello, We just purchased the Electrolux side by side counter depth fridge (E23CS78HSS) a week ago. This past weekend the power failure light can on and the temperatures began to rise in the fridge and...

A week ago sounds like it is still under warranty. Check the manual for a troubleshooting chart and see if there is anything power failure. If you find nothing, return the fridge for another one.

I have an amana fridge model # arb190rcw.nothing remains frozen in the freezer.and i have noticed ice on the back wall of the freezer compartment

Your cooling coils have frosted so much that there is ice forming allover the cooling coils and preventing the actual cooling inthe fridge. First of all shut off the fridge for about 10 hours and wait for all the ice to defrost. Clean up your fridge well and then check inside of the freezer compartment for break in wiring, failure of the heater or the thermostat. Now put the fridge on and see if the cooling comes back.If the set works ok then dont worry till you experience the same fault coming back. In this case your auto defrost timer could be faulty as it is not doing the 8 hours cycle defrosting. Check this out test and replace . Get help if you are not familiar. good day

The freezer is working but the fridge part is not blowing any air. Model #BR22TL, MFG No P1196710WL and S/N 9801166059. I have check for continuty and all readings are o.k regards Elton Hinds

Hello,

The refrigerator gets its cold air from the freezer, usually through a flap between the two sides. First make sure your temperature control has not been turned down in your refrigerator. You might have to defrost your freezer to get the flap working again, which could mean something in the defrost circuit is bad.

Also note that
The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

Hope this works and Good luck in fixing....

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

I have an Amanda side by side, the fridge temp

Look in the freezer side for a ice buildup on the back wall.
Ice= defrost parts issue.
Check the fan in the freezer. Is it running?
Not running? Could be a defrost thermostat issue or a bad fan motor.

Freezer side blowing all the time and fridge side is warm with no cooling on amana side by side unpluged and defosted with hair dryer and it worked for a couple days then went back warm in fridge side...

You have a defrost issue.
Adaptive defrost control.
Defrost thermostat.
Defrost heater.
These are the only 3 parts involved.
If there was a model number I could be more help.
