Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite can't detect blank discs, neither CD nor DVD. Other discs it has no problem reading. I tried deleting the upper and lower filter registry keys to no avail.

Did you try running the Windows 7 repair disk? If this does not fix the problem, then try a restore point when the drive was working properly.

Dvd burner not detecting blank dvd

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it

I have dell inspiron 6000 my combo drive is not recognizing dvd format movies although it is supporting cd formate

Hi Fazi1814,

If you're issue is that the dvd drive could not read the cd at all then you might want to try deleting upper and lower filters from registry editor. This files from windows sometimes cause an issue to your drive/
Here are the steps on how to locate and delete them:

1. Open Registry Editor - go to Start then type regedit on start search box then enter
If you get any notification just click continue
2. Once window is open, Look for the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10
To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. On the right pane, select upper and lower filter, right click then delete.
4. Click Yes when prompted
5. Exit registry editor and restart the computer

If your issue is that the drive reads the disk but it does not play the movie. This could be an issue with the movie format. Not all movie format can be played by the windows media player. In this case you need to have either of the following: (but I suggest you get both)

1. K-Lite Codec Pack 7.10 (Full) (to be able to read almost all types of movie and music format)
2. VLC Media Player 1.1.8 (can read any kind of format without installing any codec but still recommended to have codecs installed)

You can try downloading this two software from www.filehippo.com.

Hope this works!

Thank you for using Fixya,

Drive reports no disk even though a disk is inserted?

Does it do this with all disks - or just one?
If it is all disks, your drive is probably died or dying, if it is jjust one disk, then it could be the disk is faulty.
If it is a blank disk, it could be the wrong format - R instead of a +R, or vice a versa,

If it is only one disk and it is a data disk try using this to recover the data.

If this helped you then please help me by voting kindly, thank you.

My computer wont read disks it was able to a few days ago and i went to go put in a disk that needs to get installed before i can use a camera. I have tried others disks and it wont read any of them....

You need to first check if the disk is being detected by Computer--

click start---computer ---check if the disk that u insert is visible there or not.
And also chk in device manager---by right click on computer--properties---device manager(vista)--look for cd/dvd drive.
right click on my computer---properties---hardware----device manager(xp))--look for cd/dvd drive.

If not visible in device manager then u have to open up ur computer and reseat the cd/dvd drive cables...

If its visble in device manager--then right click on the option under cd/dvd drive----properties----check for the error code.
If error code 19 , 31 , 32 , or 39 is displayed inside Device Status.

Then click start -- run -- and -- type regedit -- click ok . the registry editor appears.

In windows XP -- click file -- EXPORT-- TYPE A FILENAME THAT IS EASY FOR YOU TO REMEMBER AND CLICK SAVE.

A COPY OF THE REGISTORY HAS SAVED FOR BACKUP PURPOSE.
CLICK THE PLUS SIGN (+) NEXT TO THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN THE LIST :

In Vista click:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CURRENTCONTROLSET (OR THE CURRENT CONTROL SET WITH LOWEST NUMBER IF THAT IS ALL THAT IS LISTED)
CONTRO
CLASS
SELECT 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
SELECT THE UPPER FILTER IN THE RIGHT WINDOW AND PRESS THE DELETE KEY
CONFIRM THE DELETION BY CLICKING YES
SELECT THE LOWER FILTERS IN THE RIGHT WINDOW AND PRESS THE DELETE KEY
CONFIRM THE DELETION BY CLICKING YES
DELETE ALL OTHER UPPER FILTER AND LOWER FILTER VALUES WITHIN THE 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 KEY
CLOSE THE REGISTRY EDITOR AND RESTART THE COMPUTER ...
This should resolve the issue...
Let me the the error code and msg in device manager window.....

Thank you ....

I recently lost my CD/DVD drive when I (correctly) uninstalled a Roxio application from my Toshiba laptop. After a week of frustration, I finally found the fix. My CD/DVD drive is back!

Go to the Windows START menu.
Click on RUN and enter: regedit

FOLLOW THIS TREE:
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

In the CLASS folder, look for:
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters] You will see the upper and lower filters folders once you get to the end of the tree… *\*\*\control\class
If a backup folder for either the upper or lower filter folders shows up, clear all the data from these folders as well.

Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Dvd drive wont work

That error and a number of other error codes can be reported for a DVD or CD writer if something has damaged one of the filter drivers, which are called Upper Filter and Lower Filter drivers in the Windows Registry. They can be installed by CD-writing software such as Roxio Easy CD, or by DVD players such as PowerDVD, or by programs such as Musicmatch Jukebox.
Microsoft describes the problem in MS Knowledge Base article 314060 - CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 after you remove Roxio Easy CD Creator in Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314060.
The article applies to Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional It implies that the problem is caused only by Roxio software, but the error can occur with any type of CD-writing or DVD software. Error messages that may occur when you try to access your CD or DVD drive include:
1. - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the Registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
2. - This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
3. - A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
4. - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
5. - Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
However, there are other causes for these and similar messages. The solution provided below applies mainly to CD or DVD drives. For other explanations, read this MS Knowledge Base article - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310123.
Uninstalling and then reinstalling CD-writing and DVD software may cure the problem, but in other cases, such as yours, the Windows Registry has to be edited in order to fix it. Making erroneous changes to the Registry can render a computer unbootable, so before you edit it, use Windows XP's System Restore to create a restore point that will allow you to restore it in Safe Mode, or export the keys from the Registry editor by using its File => Export feature. For more information, enter the word Registry in the Search box of Start => Help and Support.
Enter regedit in the Start => Run box to run the Registry Editor and click on the + signs to expand and highlight the following keys:
H_KEY _LOCALMACHINE => SYSTEM => CurrentControlSet => Control => Class => {4D36E965E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 1 0318}
There should be many keys called {4D36E965E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 1 0318}
If you want to export a copy of the values, select File => Export and enter a suitable filename, which will be saved as a .reg file that can be restored just by clicking on it. When you select a particular key, in the right window, for some of them, you should see keys called UpperFilters and LowerFilters. Select each such entry in turn, right-click with the mouse on it, and click Delete. After closing the Registry Editor, you should be able to use the CD/DVD drive again. However, you may have to reinstall software that accesses the drive, such as CD writers and DVD players.
