Question about Microwave Ovens

Last night July 1,2008 while cooking steaks on my Charbroil Commercial Series grill it caught on fire. It was during the last 2 to 3 minutes of cooking that I saw black smoke coming out of closed grill, along with unusual flames viewed from rear of grill as I was keeping an eye on grill from my kitchen window. I went to grill, removed the 3 steaks quickly as the entire grilling area was engulfed in flames. It was so serious I had to call the fire dept. I was so afraid the propane tank would blow up. My son and I stayed in front of the house in fear of explosion and when the fireman arrived I went to show them where to go and fortunately the fire was out by itself. I believe the propane tank had run out of fuel and the fire burned itself out. The grill is charred and even the center grate rear area is melted. This is a major concern and disappointment in a B'Day gift from my family last May. I need to know what to do with this grill and certainly will need a replacement quickly, especially with the holiday weekend coming up. Please advise. Sincerely, Donna l. Zurzola ps: in choosing an expert: grills were not listed so I choose microwave as closed cooking method I figured

Please disregard and further correspondence. As I mentioned at the bottom of my initial note> It was a grill and there was no specific selection for it. I am dealing with the store where grill was purchased. Thanks anyway

Does the owner's manual address the possible situations which could lead to a fire?

Does the manual recommend fire control methods such as a spray bottle, a bucket of water on standby, etc.?

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.
Please post a new help request here on FixYa and include the full model number from the tag in the cooking cavity or elsewhere on the microwave, such as the door frame, controller frame, etc. and detailed symptoms and when they occur.

It sounds like instead of an overheated magnetron thermostat tripping the power, you now have a defective door switch.

Our door switch help file is here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I worked for a place that repairs appliances and rule of thumb is if a microwave sparks dont bother trying to fix it just replace it.Microwaves work with so many watts sparks could mean a resister is shot witch could be very dangerous and if it stopped functioning thats probably the case.

Make sure the oven is clean and that the wave guide is not damaged or dirty. It's a heavy paper like thing on the wall that can deteriorate or get dirty and cause fire.

Potato caught fire during cooking. Microwave has

Hello, inside most microwaves, there is a thermal fuse, that if something in the cooking cavity is on fire, it will melt the thermal fuse, if it gets hot enough, thus breaking the power to the unit shutting it off. This sounds like what has happened to yours, simply replacing it will correct the problem. It is usually located near a cavity exhaust point. If you aren't comfortable doing this, as it requires removing the outer cover, while unplugged, and locating/replacing it, take it to a appliance service co. This will of course cost more, if you do it yourself, make sure you provide all of your make/model/serial/anything else, that will identify your unit, and call/go online to a parts retailer, and you should be able to get it done fairly cheap.

Hope this helps, and thank you.
