Hold in the RECORD button and pull 4-way slider switch all the way down into REWIND position until tape is fully rewound.

I believe you can merely record over whatever is on the tape. While recording, the machine erases whatever was previously recorded. I hope this helps you.

Accidently recorded over important material on a vhs tape. Is there anyway I can retrieve it??

I'm afraid not. When you record, the record heads automatically erase everything that was previously on that tape. So whatever footage was on that tape is gone for good. Sorry!

While holding the 'Erase' button down, press the 'Rewind' or "Fast Forward' button. It will erase the tape while it rewinds or fast forwards.

How to erase data from the cassette tape

You are able to erase tapes on this machine by holding down the play and rewind buttons together. To clear the entire cassette, you'll need to physically turn the tape over and repeat.

Hope that helps

Yeah, a strong magnatic field can erase whole tape at once. You can try it by using Deggausing Coil at TV repair shops, though i have not tried it yet.

How to erase tapes

In reading the pamphlet that came with mine, I noticed that it says that when a recording is made , the previous recording is automatically erased. I guess you can only erase it by recording over it, which is stupid.....I can't believe they didn't put an erase button on it!

Bad recording from any source

The fact that both inputs give you a bad recording indicates its something common to both inputs. First thing I would do is try cleaning the heads. It's the cheapest solution to try. There is also an erase head as well, but that is usually not part of the video head. The erase head erases the tape just prior to the record head recording the new material on the tape. Problems in the erase head will cause you to see both what you just recorded and what was previously on the tape. The picture will be distorted and shifting back and forth between the new program and the previous one.

Good luck!

Recording problem on Sony SLV-R1000

The deck needs a good cleaning. Try using a brand new tape and run it on playback for 20 min or so. You could try using a cleaning tape, but many of them are abrasive. If this doesn't work, you need a deck re-alignment which will cost more than your set is worth.
