HP dv6000 laptop not charging problem, adapter, battery and power jack looks like it works fine

If your battery, charger, and DC Jack are ok, then the most common problem is the surface mount transistors on your HP's main board called MOSFET's. They are small 30V N channel 8 pin components soldered to the main board. The boards also have transistor circuits which switch back and forth between a charging and discharging state. However these rarely ever fail. The MOSFETS fail because of the thermal loads which they must endure. Although some notebooks (like the Gateway I'm currently on) have a DC jack which serves dual purpose of supplying DC 19V AND connecting/disconnecting charging circuit. However your HP dv6K does not.
However it's worth mentioning that these models have had all sorts of problems...most notably poor thermal design to begin with that usually creates solder connection problems with the main chipset especially on AMD models. Good luck.. :)

Laptop turns off after mains removed

WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards

Check all power and data leads from motherboard to hard drive and all of your cd/dvd drives make sure connections are secure dust free and not faulty computers need all power and data to travel through every working device and to finish its cycle so any faulty lead will end in computer error or shutdown / fail to boot or to reboot on a cycle make sure your computers RAM modules are securely seated with no dust in the sockets also the Cmos battery has charge and seated with no dust in the sockets some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in might be getting hot check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-February-2012/1490

How can you tell if a Dell power supply for a PowerEdge 2900 is good? Should the lights at least indicate when power is connected even with the PS is removed from the machine? How do you best determine if...

You cannot test the power supply on the bench just by connecting it to the mains power. You need to know which pins on the connector to activate the power supply and you need to connect a load to the power leads.
The best way to test the power supply is to leave the power unit connected to the computer power up the computer and test a spare 4 wire power connector with a multi-meter. Leave the other power leads connected to the various drivers.
If computer's power LED should light up then test the voltages.
The Red and black wire should read 5 volts.
The Yellow and black wire should read 12 volts.
If the power LED does not light up, check the mains lead in another appliance to see if the mains lead is OK.
If the mains lead is OK then most likely the switch mode power supply has died.

Labtop wont start up

Hi I am a laptop technician, and it sounds like you have a power problem.

Try removing the main battery and starting the laptop on the mains cable only. If the laptop starts fine then you probably have a problem with either the battery or the power board in the laptop.

If the laptop doesn't start when doing this, remove the mains power lead from the laptop and put the main battery back on the laptop. Try starting the laptop off the main battery only and if the laptop starts normally then you most likely have a broken/loose socket that the power lead plugs into in the back of the laptop (a very common problem) or the power board in the laptop is faulty. If the laptop doesn't start or goes off very shortly after pressing the power button it could just be that the battery is flat as a broken power socket on the laptop often stops the main battery from charging.

I hope this helps.

Power issues on HP DV1000

It is possible you have two dud batteries. Recharageable batteries have a limited life, they have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles.
With the battery removed and only the power supply connected and the laptop powered up, when you touch the connector on the laptop and the laptop does not shut down then the laptop connector is OK.

If you can verify your new battery is OK the the fault could be the power supply adapter, if may not produce enought current to run and charge the battery. Try charging the battery overnight by turning off the laptop and leaving on the mains t charge. Borrow a mains adapter and test it on your computer.

You can also check the BIOS setting for power management, ie. hibernate, low power shut down etc.
