Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice-versa. If you printed with a color missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with a color missing even if you aren't using it.

If you allow the red color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.

Leaving your printer on takes very little power. Every so often the printer sends a signal to cycle the ink in the heads so it doesn't clog. If you turn your printer off, the next time you turn it on it will do a cleaning which wastes a lot of ink. The excess ink is soaked up by the waste pad beneath the printer. When the waste pad is full, the printer stops working. Unless you want to spend more than the cost of the printer or waste a lot of time on a messy cleanup you will end up throwing the printer out. So shutting it off actually shortens its life.

If you leave the printer off for extended periods of time, the ink in the heads will clog and you will have to throw the printer away. Someone I know with a Canon (though this can happen with any inkjet) had to have the heads replaced twice within the first few months before the Canon tech told her to stop turning it off. Since then it has worked perfectly for over a year.

How to clear blocked print heads:
-leave the printer on for a day
-run several head cleanings and print the nozzle check pattern
-if that doesn't fix it, remove the cartridge(s) from the blocked head and drop alcohol where the ink enters the printer.
-reinsert the cartridges
-run one head cleaning
-wait about an hour then run some head cleanings.
-dip the print heads in Isopropyl Alcohol overnight, which you can buy from chemist
-if that still doesn't work, your heads may be clogged to the point where they need repair or replacement, which will probably cost more than a new printer.

The printer's lying to me

The printer requires both cartridges to have ink before the printer will initialize and operational. Even if you are only printing black and white both cartridge have to contain ink or the printer will error out. This is standard on all ink jet printers from every manufacturer. You will have to get ink before you can print.

Hp is known for being a pain with ink.

We once had a business jet that would not print because our ink had expired lol...

The printer wont work because it know's that the old cart has no ink. And since it needs all three colors along with black to print it will not do it, Usually you can set the printer to print only black under properties or print settings.

Other then that you will need another cartridge. You can also try one more thing. If you need to print in a Pinch, down on the right hand part of your screen, Is the clock. Double click it and change the date back a year from today and see if that helps you print

What does it mean when it says change k cartridge

There should be four ink cartridges inside the printer: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK.

While monitors build colours out of three emissive (active) base colours, red, green and blue, printers usually build them out of four absorbing (passive) inks, so-called CMYK. The black is referred to by its last letter to avoid confusion with Blue.

On most printers, since they usually print in black ink over white paper (and black is used to darken all other colours), the K cartridge is either bigger than the others, or needs to be replaced more often.

Epson sx200 printer, wont print black ink only

Many printers especially Photo ones also use colour even when printing Black. so you do need to replace the spent colour cartridge.

If you only need to print in black get a B&W printer not a colour one.

It is printing everything with a green tint and I had not changed any settings. I have also gone out and bought two new ink cartridges thinking maybe the new one I had was defective. There is no change...

I have personally encountered similar problem in my work. There is no problem with your printer.

Sometimes when either of the inks overflow at the nozzle, it gets absorbed to an extent into another ink compartment. So that colour affected now prints another colour; the colour that has crept into its compartment, Sometimes it is serious at other times is not. If not serious, usually, after a few solid colour prints the colour affected returns to normal.

I do not know how much of a technical person you are, but I will give you the solution to returning your colours from green the right colour. Bring out your colour cartridge. Peel off the seal covering top of the ink cartridge. You will see the holes through which in is fed into it. Get a clean handkerchief, fold it and place over the top of the cartridge. Hold it over a bowl or something. Now place your mouth over the top with the handkerchief in between and blow hard. Ink will discharged at the nozzle. Clean off the ink. (At the nozzle do not rub only dab). Now press a piece of folded tissue to the nozzle firmly. It should be blotted with ink:- red, blue, yellow. If any colour is missing you may need to repeat the procedure. Once you get the three colours back, the issue is resolved.

Prints in blue and green ; all ink cartridges are

Dear Dahcota; If it has a single color cartridge, there are three components inside the cartridge-red, green, blue, and all colors are a superimposition of these 3 basic colours RGB in different proportions. It looks like the red component has run dry. So, what you get is the color without the red component. If its showing all cartridges as being full, sometimes these levels shown are inaccurate. Try changing the entire color cartrigde or red component, then see if you still have the same problem. What I am not sure is if the red cartridge is a separate entity . If the red is separate, and changing it does not improve things, the connection in the printer might be faulty. Go to www.hp.com and browse for the correct make ask them online there, It should really be okay, once you have replaced the red or entire color cartridge is it is a single unit with all 3 colours

Hi,

Hope this will give you hints. To pin point directly you need to replace printer head. But before replacing please consider suction cartridge caps or nozzle by cleaning and freeing clogged airways by dettaching manually. I understand that the long time being not used has caused the problem. However if you can still use black and other colors then used it than complicating downtime in repairing procedures. Yes, you are right no need to clean deeper more than three times it will consume inks half empty. Have a nice day.
