You almost had it. First have it pluged in like u did. Then while its trying to start hold the home and power button untill it turns off like u did at the end. Last release the power button but hold the home button down. Do not let go of the home button untill it works. If it wont it will reboot like it had but it will work.

You need a new logic board. Apple
should give you a replacement. If you're out warranty, you can try to

I have a feeling that when you ran the battery down it is now struggling to get and hold a charge.
If you have a friend with a similar battery perhaps try that, or go to a mobile store and ask them to try a new battery for you.
