Boots up but goes to the xp screen and then shuts down and restarts. what do i do?

You will need your XP CD to run a Repair install.

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will need to press enter to setup Windows XP.
3. To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install, press ENTER. DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read the fix at the end of this post.
6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

If you don't have an option to repair, try this:

1. Boot with XP CD.
2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.
3. Login to the Recovery Console using your Admin password if needed.
4. Type bootcfg
5. This should fix any boot.ini errors causing setup not to see the XP installation.
6. Try the repair install again.

If the Repair is still not an option, try the following:

1. Boot with XP CD.
2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.
3. Login to the Recovery Console using your Admin password if needed.
4. If the CD letter is K: give these commands

* copy K:\i386\ntldr C:\
* copy K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\

While still in the Recovery Console, try this as well:

1. Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini
2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild
3. Now Restart and try the Repair Install again.

How do i reset my hp computer back to the way i bought it?

factory settings could mean performing a system restore to a previous state of the OS. I'll try to explain how you can perform each one of these methods in the article below.
Restore Factory Settings - System Restore System Restore is the in-built tool of Windows XP and Windows Vista that allows you to roll back the registry to a previous state. Note that it only "restores" previous settings for the registry and Windows system files.
You can use system restore to get rid of spyware, but if system restore does not fix your problem, you'll have to resort to either a clean install of the OS or using your recovery CD/DVDs.
You can read my previous post on how to restore your computer using the System Restore feature. If system restore is disabled, you can read my post on how to enable system restore again.
restorefactorysettings-thumb.png
Restore Factory Settings - Recovery CD/DVDs Most computers come with either a recovery CD/DVD or a recovery partition that is hidden on the computer. This is true for most HP and Dell machines now these days.
If you have one of these, you can access the recovery from within Windows or during startup.
For HP, you can go to Start, All Programs, HP Tools, and then choose HP PC System Recovery.
hprecoverymanager-thumb.png
You can also press the F10 key multiple times during bootup to get access to the recovery console in case Windows is not loading properly.
On Dells, you can access the recovery partition by pressing Ctrl + F11 immediately after the machine is turned on.
Note that all of your data will be lost on the hard drive. Using a recovery CD is not the same as repairing XP. When you repair Windows XP, all of the system files are replaced with the original ones, but your data and applications remain intact.
Restore Factory Settings - Clean Install XP Your last and final option for restoring XP to factory settings is to perform a clean install. This requires having the CD/DVD for the OS. If you only have a hidden recovery partition, you will not be able to perform a clean install.
A clean install basically consists of booting from the original XP CD, deleting all partitions, recreating new partitions, and then installing Windows XP from CD.
It's a fairly straight-forward process and you can read this excellent tutorial for step by step instructions. Again, it's important to note that you will lose all your data in this process.

Boot from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
Choose 'R' to "repair".
This will start the "Recovery Console".
Run the 'DISKPART' utility to create a new partition.
Remove the CD-ROM, and then type 'exit' to shutdown the Recovery Console.
Insert the first of the 10 "recovery" CDs, and start the reload/recovery.

Burn a XP Installation CD/DVD and use the XP CD Key of your recovery Version. Note that you have a OEM Product so it could be that you need special drivers for your hardware that were integrated in your recovery installation.

Here is the support page of your System: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=de&cc=ch&lang=de&product=363424&

Here you have the mainboard specification if you have to search for newest chipset drivers:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07845&lc=en&dlc=de&cc=ch&lang=de&product=363424

You can see there most parts of you Hardware:

Chipset:
Northbridge: 845GL
Southbridge: ICH4

Graphiccard: Intel Extrem Graphics
Is integrated in the Northbridge.

For this devices you can find drivers here: http://pixel01.cps.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009236.htm

Soundcard: Is a Realtek AC97 derivat called Realtek ALC202A. You can find the newest drivers for this device here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Network interface controller: Realtek RTL8100

Heres the driver: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Just for clarification, if you lost your XP CD Key theres no way to install XP on your System legaly. You need to buy a new Windows XP licence!

Replacement harddrive into acer pc

No matter what you do, you need to partiton and format the drive and install an OS, be it with the Acer recovery disks or with an original XP install disk. You will need to boot from your CD drive to install the OS, if your drive is not bootable you will need to boot from a floppy and load drivers for the CD drive. For information on how to get these boot floppies check out this Microsoft link:

Replacing with harddrive 40GB

Did you simply swap hard drives? "Couldn't find NTLDR" basically means the PC cannot find any version of Windows installed because the boot file is missing. This could be because you have a CD in the drive or the hard drive is missing or broken.

If you put in a new hard drive to replace your older smaller one you need to reinstall Windows on that new 40GB drive or it just won't work. If you have some PC Tech friends they should be able to move the data which is tricky or help you out.
