Hi. Thanks for your question.

  1. First thing to try would be to unplug power connectors on both router and modem. Once you connect them together right with ethernet cable power modem first and then router
  2. If first thing don't work I would advice to reset router to it's factory settings by pressing reset button on the back of it (you will need to do that with some pin, or tip of the pen)
  3. Once router is restarted repeat step 1.
  • Your network may come up unsecured on your PC, so you will need to secure it.
Please see this link for informations on how to get into your routers settings.------->http://www.fixya.com/support/r4695161-change_wireless_network_password_forgott
Please ignore the part about cable in it because you can connect to yours wireless.
  1. Once your on settings page go to wireless tab and then security. Choose your new password and remember to save it before you leave the page.
  2. Once all this is done please reconnect your PC to the network using your new password.

Good luck and please do not hesitate to ask more questions if in need. Thank You for using FixYa

How did my linksys router's ssid change when i got a new modem

I haven't a clue? Reset the device to default settings and reconfigure. Use this procedure, if you need it, to reconfigure, update the firmware if applicable: http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54G AND this: http://www.columbia.edu/acis/networks/aptnet/linksys/

Wireless Network Reset and Setup - Linksys

If you are unable to connect your laptop wireless to your Linksys wireless access point/router, the easiest and fastest way to get going is to reset your router to the factory defaults. This will make your router work like the day you bought it.

There are 2 steps involved Reset your router, Setup/Secure a new router

Reset your router:

  • Unplug your DSL/Cable modem from power (not your access point/router) Leave this unplugged for now

Next
  • On the rear of your Linksys router you will find a small RESET button
  • With the power still on the router, Press and hold (with a pin/pen tip) the RESET button for 30 seconds.
  • Release the RESET button a wait 15 seconds for the router to reboot

almost done....
  • Unplug your Linksys router from power
  • Plug your DSL/Cable modem back in to power
  • Wait 1 minute for the modem to boot up
  • Be sure the ethernet (cat5) cable from your modem is securely plugged into the WAN port on the back of your Linksys router. This is usually labeled WAN or Internet above the jack
  • Plug your Linksys router back into power.

You will now be able to connect to the internet with your wireless device. I would advise that you follow the next steps in securing your wireless network.

Setup/Secure a new router

Log into your router
  • Type 192.168.1.1 into your web browser and hit enter
  • In the login fields (case sensitive):
  • Username: leave_this_field_blank
  • Password: admin
  • Click OK

Once in the web interface for your router
  • Click Wireless tab - Basic Wireless Settings
  • Find the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field
  • change this to your new network name (this is the name you will see when you connect through your wireless device)
  • Find the Wireless Channel field
  • Change this from 6 (default) to 1 or 11

  • Click on Wireless Security
  • Find the Security Mode field
  • Choose WPA2 - Personal
  • WPA Algorithm choose AES
  • WPA Shared Key type in your new password you will use to connect to your network

Click Save Changes and your router will now reboot. You will now need to enter in that same password (WPA Shared Key) when you first connect with your laptop to your wireless network

I was trying to connect a new laptop to our home wireless network via wrt54g. on installing our old linksys disc into the new laptop it kept sayin not connected to the internet even though it was hardwired...

Your mistake was to run the CD on the laptop. When a router is working and computers are using it NO CDS ARE EVER NEEDED. Your laptop will connect to it just using what is already in the computer.
When you go to starbucks and use the internet they don't give you a CD to install do they - they just give you a password - that is all you need. The fact that you are hard-wired means you don't even need a password.

Says connected to linksys but can't get on internet

You need to reinstall the router to your modem. Start with unplugging both the modem and the router. Plug in the modem and wait for der blinkin' lights to stop (linked to host) then plug in the Linksys. Now, depending on whether you have a DSL or Cable Modem, you need to follow the installation instructions. In DSL, you will need to set PPPoE, a username and password, etc. You can go to the Linksys site and get the FAQ for your modem here http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G

If the setup does not work, and most notably in Cable Company modems, they may have to send a reset to make the Linksys work.

Wireless network broken, access to WRT54G & Motorola 2210-02 via http.. denied

I have att yahoo dsl which I installed about a year ago. The process required bridging the ADSL Modem (in my case a speedstream 4100) and accepting dynamic IP addresses and configuring PPPoE on the WAN side of my Linksys router. The ATT support person walked me through the entire process over the phone even though I was comfortable with making the Linksys configuration changes as I had to do the same in China without technical support. The modem configuration was no more difficult than the router configuration as it was performed from a web browser too. The biggest warning was that to reverse the modem change (if desired) required use of a reset button because the web interface was disabled as a result of the configuration change. My advice to you especially if you are willing to attach the Linksys router to the telco modem is to contact the ATT highspeed DSL support line and see if they will walk you through it like they walked me through it. Reviewing your Linksys User's Guide and understanding the configuration of that device would probably be appreciated by the ATT Support person as well as assuring you can access the Linksys router to configure it during the call.
