Hoover Whirlwind with bag roller, bar does not turn, has both belts and suction is fine.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It could be that the brushroll could be installed wrong and not in the vacuum correctly. Or the bearings on either end are froze up and not turning. Or the 2 belts that you described need changing, the suggested belt change is every 4 to 6 months for a flat belt change and the extra belts to be stored in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. If the brushroll id totally shot, then replace it with a new or rebuilt brushroll. please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

HOW TO CHANGE A BELT

Hi there...You will need a Phillips screwdriver to get the bottom cover off.Remove the screws and then remove the bottom cover.Clean out any excess dirt in the general area of the roller bar and motor assembly area.Place one end of the belt over the steel shaft of the motor and then roll the other end of the belt on to the end of the roller bar.placing the belt on the top of the roller bar and roll the bar slowly and feed the belt onto the roller bar until it is completely in place.Replace the bottom cover and put all the screw back in.
Plug your vacuum in and turn it on with the roller bar off the floor, in other words let it run for 10 seconds until you put it on the carpet allowing the belt to position itself properly on the roller bar.

Beater bar not turning

The number one cause of the "beater bar" (or brush roller) not rotating is a broken belt.

The number two cause of brushes not rotating is that something is jammed & wound around the roller, preventing it from rotating.

For the belt: If you remove the screws holding the bottom plate, you should see one (or maybe two) short, wide rubber belt(s) that goes around the roller.

If this is broken, it's easy to replace. They do break because of age and wear. One of the leading causes of breakage is when the roller gets something - a curtain cord, for example - wrapped around it. If you don't immediately shut off the vacuum & remove the cord, the belt will continue to try to turn the roller (which can't turn), and this generates a lot of heat in just a few seconds.

You can find belts at places like Sears, Home Depot, or your local vacuum shop.

For just the roller: Turn the vacuum over on its side and inspect the roller. Will it turn? Can you see something wound around it that's jamming it? While you here, take a minute and clean the roller... including using scissors or a knife to snip & remove wound hairs & threads. A clean and healthy roller will help to keep your belt happy!

Belt is on roller. Not sure how and how to reattach

When you put the beater bar back in have the belt hook in the normal operating position. Hold the whole beater bar housing upside down and turn the hook. It will grab the belt. Once it does, keep on turning. It will get tough to do, but turn it until you can't go anymore. Then put it all back together!

That means that you need to replace the belt which turns the roller brush. Here is the belt you need to replace and the manual which has instructions:

Brush not working??? Belt is fine.

Even though the brush is spinning, you probably need to replace the belt2_bing.gif because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar...

DC17 Animal - loud noise in roller bar

We were able to get in touch with the Dyson support people and they told us this model doesn't have a clutch in the roller bar. The support person helped us walk through looking at the vacuum and it turns out the belt was stripped and they are sending us a new replacement belt. Case Solved!!

Vaccumn repair ...lostlosing suction, belt still turning roller bar, hose clear

To generate strong suction, the motor has to turn at a good speed. If its a bag vacuum change bag with new one when a great deal of debris builds up in the vacuum bag, the air faces greater resistance on its way out.

Will not ****

Willieturbo - Unplug Kirby, remove the nozzle and the bag. Use a coat hanger wire to make sure there is nothing stuck in exhaust (under front fan cover). Remove disposable bag - check if there is nothing stuck in the plastic miniemptor and bag fill tube.
If no clogs - check if brush roll bristles stick out of the nozzle by about 1/8 of an inch. For more info go HERE and scroll down to brush/belt installation instructions.

lilmissjen - If brush sweeps AWAY from the vacuum then someone must have worked on the unit and switched wires that go from motor brushes to power switch go HERE and see pictures #16 and #18

Good Luck,
Rocky
