Re: Vista based computer does'nt read the usb port
The software that originally came with the camera is not Vista compatible. Go to www.olympusamerica.com and click the link for software downloads and then click the link for the free download of Olympus Master 2. This is the software that is now compatibel to Windows Vista.

Although the disk is useful, XP will still recognize the camera when hooked up to the USB port, and it will still download your pictures to your computer. You can also get a card reader that will download your pictures through the USB port. Check your printer, most of the newer printers have card readers built into them these days, and you might be able to download your pictures to your computer through it. If you really want to try to get the disk for the FE-170, you might call Best Buy and talk to a computer tech. I used to be a tech at one of their stores, and they usually save or make extra copies of disks for their products, and they might be able to make you a copy. Last resort, get hold of Olympus support on the internet or by phone to order one, but they might charge for it, not sure. Good luck, hope this helps.
Connect this to your computer via USB ..and wait.
Then press OK button on the camrea onece (this will "blindly" accept connection to the PC MODE)..
In a few seconds you will have a Removable Drive available in My Computer folder (Windows) or you will see iut on the desktop (Mac) ... Copy your pictures out of the DCIM folder to your computer ;-) ..
Or .. replace a screen ... I have a "parts-out" FE-170 with a good screen - easy to replace ... write back if you want it firstname.lastname@example.org
Make sure the camera is on and pc is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have PC highlighted and select ok on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.
The camera is an autoconnect camera. There are no drivers needed if you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista. The camera should immediately be recognized when connected to the computer. If you need photo editing software then you can go to www.olympusamerica.com and click on software downloads and download the free version of Olympus Master 2.
