Question about Toshiba 120GB USB 2.0 Portable External 120 GB Hard Drive

Toshiba 2.0 external hard drive

I have been using this device for 7-8 months on several computers without problems. Recently I have been unable to connect it to the computers. It will not recognize the device. In the device Manager it states that No drivers are installed for this device. I am currently running windows XP.

    After connecting to USB port the computer responds with a beep. Usually a message appears stating unknown device however I am not able to get the message now. Nothing is running in the hard drive. Valuable information for work is in the hard drive.

    Not sure if this helps but when the external drive is than removed from the computer the device manager list the device status with an ! in yellow and notes windows can not use this hardward device because it has been prepared for "safe removal" bu it has not been removed from the computer. I am unable to safely remove device as it does not appear.

    It only show the yellow ! symbol when the device is connected. Otherwise it shows the usb port as functioning normal.

    I had the same problem - try this.


    • Connect the Toshiba to create the issue.

    • Right-click My Computer then select Properties.

    • From the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab then click the Device Manager button

    • Find the Toshiba with the yellow !

    • Right-click the item with the yellow ! and select uninstall.

    • OK through all the warnings.

    • After the uninstall completes, open USB device manager from the System Tray (system tray is the bottom right section that contains your system clock), highlight the Toshiba and stop it as you normally would. Chances are, the USB manager will display unknow device.

    • Disconnect the Toshiba from the PC (including the cable).

    • Count to thirty or so.

    • Reconnect the drive.

    • The system will reinstall the device normally.

    Do you hear the usb connection signal?

    Do you get a little bubble message in the tray area of the computer; if so, what does it say?

    Can you hear the drive run inside the box?



    To verify the hard drive, you may have to open the box and connect the drive directly to the (assuming ide drive) ide bus.

I'm having a similar problem with my toshiba 120gb external hard drive....but i think i know why it happened...i disconnected it before turning off the computer and now everytime i plug it in it says there is an error (something like error 339 or something) have it blown it and now it is completely useless? where can i find information to restore all my data on the external hard drive? i'm desperate! i had really important stuff in there! photos and school stuff!!!!

Yellow ! simbol show in the usb devices means your usb driver may be corrupt so OS can't recognised the usb devices, u have to reinstall the driver like that way,

At first right click on my computer icon- then select propertices- then "hardware" - then click on devices manager buttons- then select ur devices and right click on it and click propertices then u finds reinstalls button under its propertices click on it and select install software automatically (recomanded) and click on ok. then windows scarch its driver automatically and install it.

Windows will not start with a Toshiba external hard drive plugged into USB


Computer starts normally in windows with a windows that is installed on a hard disk on that copmuter. In other words - windows is installed on an internal hard disk of a computer A. If you get it out and put in a computer B it wont work.

To have the things work:
1. First should set in BIOS boot up options first boot device CD/DVD, second OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, third HDD
2. Should boot up from a CD and install windows on an external hard disk (in your case your 3TB Toshiba external HD)
3. Set in BIOS boot up options first boot device OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, second internal hard disk e.g. HDD0, HDD1

I have 2 120gb drives one will work fine the other will not work at all - so this is not the computer or the cable as indicated in the other posts


If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement.

Incompatible USB Port Problems W 7 First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:


Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.


In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".


Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".



Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. for XP or earlier click start right click on computer select properties device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X you will need to update/reinstall drivers right click to reinstall drivers if you can see your usb drive but its not working ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem Check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. Upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 ,now storage device not showing.


Have you tried to shut down the computer, unplug the usd external drive, reboot the computer, plug in the USB external HDD the should apply the driver. That said, Have you tried a Thumb Drive or any other USB device in the USB ports? It's a common problem when upgrading a OS that Hardware issues popup. Open the Device Manager, Is your USB controller working? Enabled? Any other devices in error? Unknown devices? Use the Win 7 drivers for your computer found on the computer manufacturer's website. Change the compatibility on the driver for Win 8.

My notebook Lenovo no longer reads Toshiba HDDR320E04XW 320 GB USB Hard Drive which earlier functioned correctly.


1. Try to plug in the external hard drive.

2. Goto device manager

2.1. Click Start -> (Right Click on My Computer -> Left Click on Properties-> Click on the Hardware Tab -> Click on Device Manager on Windows XP
2.2 Type "Device Manager" on Start Search (Windows Vista)
2.3 Type "Device Manager" on Search Programs and Files (Windows 7)

3. Click on the Triangle next to Universal Bus Controller

MY COMPUTER WON'T RECOGNIZE MY EXTERNAL HARD


click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash


Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
