Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Error codes keeping you from using your lap top computer?

If you are receiving error codes on your computer most likely thye hard drive has a bad sector. Hard drives last approxamately 5 to 10 years depending on useage. If shut down improperly by powering off the power button the drive will go bad. This cause is the number one problem destrying a hard drive. No need to pull your heair out. Just purchase a new drive and not a rebuilt. Rebuilts do not have a warranty as a new one does and rebuilts do go out wiy=thin months most of the time. The BIOS in your computer is set up to accept any Windows disc for your programming. Here is $10 to $20. After installing the NEW hard drive you simply install the disc and turn on the computer. You will follow simple instructions to get you computer running again. If you love your old computer you will save money repairing it instead of purchasing a new one instead

when computer boots up I get this error code A disk read error occured code 0F00:0666

A bad hard drive or the boot sector (the map of the hard drive contents) has an error.

You have two choices. If you run regular backups you can do a full restore including the boot sector, if not, you'd have to format the hard drive and lose your data. Then reinstall Windows and start from scratch.

The other option that loses your data, as well, is replacing the hard drive if it's defective.

i have an 500GB toshiba external hardrive,it still has 50G more space left..however when i tried to open it again..it wont open...it only shows the properties and said that windows cannot correct the bad sector...i want to recover all my files..photos from that hard drive...what should i do?thanks...

There is no way to fix a bad sector. A bad sector is like a scratch on a cd that can't be fixed. You should run a program like "HD Tune", when you use a program what it does is it will read the disk and when it can't read a certain spot it marks it as a bad sector. After that the hard drive will move the data from the bad sector to a spare area of the hard drive. The spare area will store the data from a bad sector and will be usable like the old one. However if you get too many bad sectors you will run out of spares. When that happens your drive will crash.

You Can Try These Steps: Windows comes with a built-in hard disk utility software that scans your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.
  1. On My Computer, select the disk drive that you want to diagnose and repair.
  2. Right click on it and select Properties
  3. Go to Tools tab.
  4. Click on the "Check Now" button under "Error Checking Status".
  5. Depending up on your choice, choose either "Automatically fix file system errors" or "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors."
  6. Then click on Start.
