Line across top of screen

Hello,
I just got a practically new Sega Genesis off Ebay and it seems to go through phases. It displays a thin horizontal line across the top of the screen. This line isn't there all the time but it always gradually appears over time when I play a game, usually getting thicker. When I switch to another game it's still there. Sometimes it's already there when I first turn on the system after not playing it for a while. I don't know if this is a normal thing for a first generation Sega Genesis (1991 model that comes with Sonic 1) but it gets me wondering. Most people wouldn't care about it but I just would like to know if it's normal. I used to have a Sega Genesis years ago and I played it on rounded cornered and sided TVs that would hide the line if the line was normal, but now with a strait-cornered TV I can see it. Could you tell me anything about this line, if it's normal or not for a practically new (Very new really) Sega Genesis? Thank you.

-Don

Sorry. I am now getting adjusted to this line and it doesn't really bother me anymore. I'm getting to think it is a normal thing for this model and version of this Sega Genesis. Sorry for this waste of time. Please don't reply with any sort of solution.

Hello. Feel free to talk about this line.

In my other post of this subject I was told that this line is actually a part of an unseen border.

Just part of an unseen border.

Hello anyone? The problem is done and I just need someone to take this out of the unsolved support problems section. I tried doing that myself today but it didn't work. This is no longer a problem. Thank you.

Normally horizontal line [a thin vertical line across the center of the screen] fault with CRT based TVs is the fault with its vertical scan output section circuit. Check and replace damaged component/s at its horizontal scan output section circuit. Check the LOT (Line Output Transformer) too for damage. Replace the horizontal scan output transistor. Check the input voltage to LOT. If the voltage is absent check the feeder resistor; if any. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

Did you say HDMI? I don't think there are HDMI plugs for Sega Genesis. You can plug in your Sega via composite video through RCA cables (yellow, red white) or via RF signal through coaxial cable. Check your TV's specs to make sure it can display standard definition content via composite or via RF.

You can double check to make sure your Sega Genesis is working properly by plugging it into an old-fashioned CRT (fat tube) television set.

I recently plugged in my Sega Genesis (MK-1601) console and purchased A/V cords to hook to my tv. When I turn the power on (the red light goes on), I usually just get a flash across the screen and then a...

This is pretty common. The games just need a good Q-Tip cleaning, and then the weird clean pencil-eraser rubbing.
Get out a Q-Tip, and rub it inside the game, on the copper part (The part you stick down into the system.). Keep doing this with new Q-Tips if the old ones get soiled with black stuff. After the new Q-Tip comes out white, it should work.
Sometimes, that isn't enough. Use some Windex or any other rubbing alcohol, dip it onto a Q-Tip, and rub it onto the copper part. Then, use a dry Q-Tip to dry it off, and let it sit out of it's case and out of the system for about 20 minutes so that the alcohol dries.
If that doesn't work, use a pencil with a clean pink eraser at the tip. Rub it inside the game, and use a Q-Tip to get all of the eraser shavings out. This breaks the electro-static cling/friction made when the game is being read by the system.
And if none of that works, go on Amazon or Ebay or to the store Slackers and get new video and AC wires for the Genesis. Sometimes that's all it needs!
I really hope this helps!
