1991 fatboy

Hi saw your replies seems you know bikes. I'm stumped. I bought a 1991 fatboy with only 10,000 on it. Mint clean bike. But I can't get it started. At first it would turn over and not fire. Now it just clicks. I put my finger on the breaker and can feel it clicking , tried to arc the post to see if that works to get power through.. no luck though . The battery is new and charged. The cables are all tight .

any help you can offer would be great.

Ty

Hi,

Appreciate the vote of confidence but there are a few others who are likewise knowledgeable if not more..

On to your concern, it would seem you have two (2) issue, 1st if wont crank and the second will crank but not start.

No Crank: Due to the massive current required by the starter a component is installed between the starter button and the starter. This component then switches the battery to the starter motor. In cars this is the starting solenoid, in most bikes, this is the starter relay. Normally in the starter relay there would be 2 big terminals for the battery and the starter motor cables with 2 smaller wires for the starter switch and ground. Try this - try pushing the start button with the headlights on, if the headlight dims considerably, then the starting relay is good and the motor is bad; on the other hand if the headlight dims just slightly or not at all, it is the starting relay (the one with the clicking sound).

Most starter motor problems could be:
1. the bearings/bushings at the ends of the armature;
2. carbon brushes;
3. commutator segments (the multiple small copper plates that the brush contacts with).

However, it may be to your advantage to simply replace the motor should it be deemed defective, difficult to secure parts or not economically reasonable to go down component level repair.

Will Crank but not fire: There are 2 major requirement for a gasoline engine to fire, fuel and ignition. No fuel could be verified by removing the air cleaner and pouring a small amount of fuel down the throat, start the bike, if it start and runs (even for just a moment), you have verified the fuel problem. No ignition could be verified by removing one of the plugs, reinsert the high tension wire plug to the sparkplug and place the sparkplug atop any metal part, crank the engine, there should be a spark at the plugs.

Pls post back results whether fuel or ignition and we can go further from there.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

2003 Fatboy while winterizing drained the oil very little came out however there was oil in filter..New filter,filled with oil started sounds like usual then the oil shot out of the cap where you insert...

On the softail model Harley Davidson's the oil tank is external and sits up higher than the engine crank case and oil pump. when these bikes sit for an amount of time the oil gravitates from the tank to the crank case. starting may seem sightly harder and seem like the battery is going dead. the bike should be started in knowing that you had oil in it to start with and no giant leak puddle underneath of it. warm up the engine and then drain the oil out of the tank. the reason why your filler cap popped off is because you had probably 2 1/2 to 3 quarts to much engine oil in the bike. so drain the oil from the tank at the drain pug at the bottom of the hose on the high (right side ) of the bike where the swing arm meets the frame (it is a 5/8 socket) put the drain plug back in run the bike for about 5 minutes inspecting with a flashlight continuously that oil is circulating back into the tank. then dran it again and replace with new oil.

HD Fatboy Starting problems

It sounds like you have a short in your start button wires, this could be caused by having custom bars with internal wiring. The wires chafe, touch, and it bypass's the button altogether. I would check continuity at the connector on the 2 wires of your start button and see if it changes whether the switch is depressed or not. If you have continuity both ways, you have a short. You should not have continuity unless you depress the button. If all looks well, re-post.

All is dead.

I'm always hestitant to offer suggestions on the newer Harleys, my experience is all on 1999 and earlier carb bikes. But try the standard stuff first. No horn or lights leads me to check my connections and fuses starting with the ground for the battery. Torque em up a little and see if it helps

The Battery and or Stator is bad. Just like on a car if you pull the negative cable off the battery while the car is running and it dies your alternator is bad.

Harley davidson fatboy electrical problem

check your brain bro. I mean your bikes brain. Its right under your ****. hmm. anyhoo the connections get funky and those after market pipes you had to have make it vibrate and then the connections don't connect. quit throwing parts at it and look at what you got. throttle input equals erratic behaviour. vibrations shouldn't affect the components you changed but they will wreak havoc on the connections inbetween
