Check the photo sensors at the bottom of the garage door tracks, and make sure each sensor can 'see' each other. Normally theres LED lights on them to let you know they are aligned. Both LEDs should be on and not blinking.

I have an older craftsman garage door opener that I just replaced the drive gear on. Everything seems to be working properly except that it will not go down unless you hold the button down until it closes...

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR SAFETY EYES MAY BE OUT OF ALIGNMENT OR A BAD CONNECTION.

WHEN HOLDING DOWN THE WALL BUTTON MAKES THE DOOR CLOSE PROPERLY THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SAFETY EYES.

ARE BOTH LEDS ON? - CHECK FOR A LOOSE OR BROKEN WIRE.

ARE THE EYES WIRED CORRECTLY?

ARE THEY AIMED AT EACH HOLDING DOWN THE WALL BUTTON OVERRIDES THE SAFETY EYES.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Door won't go down unless I continue to hold the button. Once I release the button the garage door goes back up.

Check your door sensors. They have either been bumped and no longer point at one another or one of them has quit. Make sure the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit.

Liftmaster pro 1/2 hp wont shut in one button press

You have a door sensor problem. Either your main light bulb is burned out or you don't have one in your opener. The clicking sound you hear is the relay for the light. Both of the door sensors should have a small light that is lit. Tweak them until they are.

My garage door wont go down.I habe to hold the switch down but if i let it go the door will go up again.

I have a Liftmaster garage door that won't go down unless you press and hold the wall button. The sensor lights are both on. The green light on the unit flashes unless I press the reset button. As soon as you press the wall button it flashes again and the door won't go down unless you hold the button the whole time. The remote wont' make it go down either. It begins to sometimes and retracts, but sometimes the light bulb just flashes (like it is obstructed). I tried replacing the wall switch and that did nothing. Help!
