Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Gateway Desktop PC.(831GM) I used Internet Explorer as my browser and now I can't access it. My ISP is Verizon and they tried to re-set my computer to the original default settings but we still couldn't access IE. I have a laptop connected to a router and the laptop gets IE but not the Gateway.

You may need to put your model number in gateways website and download the drivers to a thumb drive or burn to a cd before attempting this.

The fastest resolution to this problem is to take a respective windows disk (make sure you check your key on the side of the tower and see if it says xp home or xp professional) whichever you have get a windows disk the same as this and boot from the windows disk first it will ask you if you want to boot from cd press any key do so. then it will load drivers. it will then ask you if you want to load the recovery console or if you want to install windows, press what key it says for installing windows. it will then check for previous versions of windows xp on the computer. eventually it will pop-up with a license agreement, press F8 to accept. then if you used the appropriate disc (XP or PRO) it will then ask if you want to repair the previous installation of windows. press r for repair. it will then begin the repair copying files then rebooting. do not remove the disc and do not hit a key when it asks if you want to boot from the cd rom at this point. it will do it's thing for about 2-5 minutes. at this point it will ask for a license key which you will type in from your key located on the outside of the case. hit enter it will continue, if it has a question about network settings tell it to use defualt. if any other pop-ups appear between now and reboot cancel the pop-up. it will reboot and again do not boot from the cd let it time out, and done you will be in windows xp. install all drivers needed and run automatic updates if auto updates do not work google: automatic update repair batch file. there are a few out there that will auto clear the cache for updates. after running it for a while and a couple more reboots then updates will function properly.

I have problem with my internet explorer, how can i get into the netgear setting, i need to make a few chnages, can i use my isp to access it. Thanks

Type in the gateway in the address bar 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1 Default gateway should be printed on label or in your directions. Also Default gateway can be found by right clicking on the wireless computer icon next to the clock, click STATUS, click SUPPORT. If IE browser is not allowing Connection to LAN, you'll have to use alternate browser or remove IE from windows component then reinstall though add remove programs under windows components.

I have a dell laptop and myspace and facebook will not load on here for some reason, it is just these two websites and my page will load perfectly on my friends computer, so what is the problem?

The problem is with your browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome), your computer's internet settings, your local network (e.g. internet router your connected to), or Internet Service Provider (ISP) (The company your internet comes from (e.g. Qwest, Frontier, Charter, Verizon, etc.)).

Sometimes this can be temporary. Call your your ISP, and ask about it, or if your at a public place, talk to the system administrator. If neither of these things help, try searching for the problem with your specific computer model, and with your specific browser.

1. press the reset button on the back of the router for 20sec..while pressing the reset button, unplug the power plug and after 2secs while pressing the reset button plug it back in and press for 30secs after that unplug the router for 15secs then plug it back in..once all the lights are solid and ok
2. connect the ethernet cable to port1 of the router and the other end to the lan port of your computer..
3. pull up ur browser then type at the url:192.168.1.1.or 192.168.0.1 or u can check the routers default gateway by right clicking the network icon on the lower right of your task bar and click on status and it will show the ip address of the computer, subnetmask and default gateway, the default gateway is the routers ip address, once u type in to the url, it will ask u the username and password, by default the username is admin and the password is 1234 or just leave it blank
4. it will show the setup page of the router. u can set the router on the specific internet setup that u have.
a. if ur isp is a cable company, normaly u need to do a mac clone on the router setup page by cloning the computer that is reg to the cable company, how to determine it. ex. the computer that is reg to the cable company is a desktop or laptop, if this computer is connected to the modem directly and u can access internet.
b. once u determined it u need to connect this computer directly to the router and do a mac clone and set ur internet settings to auto-dhcp..then save the settings and after that, unplug to the power of the modem and router, plug in 1st the power of the modem then once all lights lit, plug in the router, then once all lights lit, try to pull up a browser that ur computer is connected directly to the router.. ur cable connection shud be, cable from the modem will go to the WAN port of the router and connect ethernet cable on port1 going to the lan port of the computer..once u can access the internet, u can now access again the setup page of the router by typing at the url:192.168.1.1 and u can setup the wireless settings, u need to create a ssid or wireless name and a security..
5. If ur isp is a dsl normaly they give u a username and password to connect to the internet, ur settings on the router should be PPPoe
6. If ur isp gives u a static ip address settings, u need to set the router to isp setup.
a. how to check the isp of the isp given to u..
1. click on start
2. run
3. type cmd
4. it will show a dos prompt
5. from the dos prompt type ipconfig/all
6. it will list the ip address, subnet, default gateway, dns server
this settings should be type in to the settings on the router for static ip addressing..
7. Once your done on the internet setting, go to your wireless connection settings and you can create a wireless network name or ssid, set a security by selecting wep, wpa, wpa2.
8. once all is set. save the settings and to check if your laptop can access the wireless network that you did, turn on the wireless switch of your laptop, once its on, it will show the wireless network icon on the lower right of the taskbar, right click it and select on view available network, the network name that u did should list, just select it and connect and it will ask for the password, just type the password and connect, you should be connected to the wireless network and have internet access..
9. If you are going to hook up your desktop to the wireless connection, you need to install a wireless network adapter, install the driver and do the same thing as u did to the laptop, for the desktop no need of turning on the wireless switch, once you install the driver correctly, it will show a network icon..
if you have any query pls feel free to get in touch.. good luck

ADSL ISP provides same address for IP and Gateway

Can you manually change the WAN IP on the router?  If so, give it an IP like 123.12.167.5 and set the gateway address to 123.12.167.1.  If it asks for a subnet mask, give it 255.255.255.0.
If she has a Linksys router, you may need to change the operating "MODE" on it.  A lot of Linksys routers have 2 modes of operation---Router mode and Gateway mode.  For her configuration, make sure the Linksys is in Gateway mode.  This will fix the NAT problem.

Cheers!

Inspiron 6400 wirless connection

HI
If the browser shows working offline and wireless is connected fine then it could be an issue where work offline is checked in the browser.
In internet explorer 6 its found on File in the menu, if work offline is already checked, check it again to remove the check mark and then try, if its internet explorer 7 its found on tools, the same steps and in firefox under file,
Also try this step as well, if its internet explorer go to tools-internet options-and in internet options-go to connections tab-there is dial up and networking box-remove the dial up connections from the box-and check the one never dial a connection

also check the firewalls and antivirus programs, post your results.

thank you

Problems with home networking between desktop running XP (wired) and laptop running Vista (wireless), using DSL broadband (PPPoE) internet connection, Westell 6100 modem/router & Linksys Wireless-G WR

Hi MissGarbs,

Based on your post and description, it would seem that your problem is caused by:
1. having 2 routers on the same system;
2. Both routers performs DHCP server function; and
3. Both routers use 192.168.1.1 as default IP Add.

Your problems are:
a. laptop has no internet access only local network; and
b. you cannot access the router to make changes.

A possible solution. Pls back up your configurations first before attempting changes (or log them down somewhere so if needed you can revert back).

A. Power off and remove all connections to the LinkSys WRT54GS, set it aside for the moment. The objective is to verify/establish Internet connection.

Connect your desktop PC via LAN cable to the Westell 6100. Boot your desktop PC, right click on the networking icon bottom right side in your system tray, click on Status, click on Properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties button (mid right):
tick "Use the following IP address"
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.4
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12
click on OK, OK, Close.

Power on the Westell 6100, give it time to sync and connect to your Verison. .In the desktop PC, open a browser. Verify that your desktop have access to the Internet, do it on a few sites. Should you have no internet access, pls seek assistance from Verizon tech support. You need not mention the LinkSys nor the laptop since you have as of the moment a single PC attached directly to the Westell 6100.

If it is all green & go, power up your laptop and boot to Windows. Remove the LAN cable at the back of your desktop and connect it to the laptop's networking port. Do the same configuration ("Use the following IP address") to the networking/LAN card of your laptop.
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12

In the laptop open a browser. Verify that your laptop have access to the Internet, do it on a few sites. Should you have no internet access, pls seek assistance from Verizon tech support again. You need not mention the LinkSys nor the desktop since you have as of the moment a single laptop attached directly to the Westell 6100. (This is of course assuming that your laptop has a networking port)

If both the desktop PC and the laptop can now connect albeit individually to the Internet, the LinkSys may now be inserted into the system.

B. Disconnect the LAN connection of the laptop to the Westel 6100 and connect it to one of the 4 LAN ports at the rear of the WRT54GS; do the same with the desktop (use another LAN cable). The LinkSys for the moment need not be connected to the Westell. So in effect you have 2 units connected to the WRT54GS. Do a hard reset on the WRT54GS, with the power on, press on the small reset button at the rear of the unit. Allow it to reinitialize. Open browsers to both laptop and desktop. Type "192.168.1.1", password is "admin" and the username is blank, verify that you can open the LinkSys Web Configuration Utility. On either the laptop or the PC desktop (assuming both can access the same page), on the setup page of the LinkSys Config, change your Internet Connection Type to "Static IP",
Internet IP Address 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12

Scroll down to Network Setup,
Change IP Address to 192.168.1.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Disable the DHCP Server (You can have at any given time only 1 instance of a DHCP server, either from the LinkSys or the Westell, but you can also have NO DHCP server if you are using static addresses.)

Click on Save Settings at the bottom, exit, and close. Verify that the LinkSys can be accessed from any of your browsers by typing "192.168.1.3", if no; go through the procedure again very carefully. If yes, proceed to change the Default Gateway of both the laptop and desktop PC from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3, all other configurations stand.

In your laptop, right click on the WiFi networking icon (bottom right of System Tray). Click on Status, click on Properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties button (mid right):
tick "Use the following IP address"
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.6
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.3
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12
click on OK, OK, Close.

Verify that you can access/connect/ping 192.168.3; 192.168.4; 192.168.1.5; and/or 192.168.1.6 from either the laptop or desktop.

If yes, we can now connect the LinkSys WRT54GS to the Westell 6100. Remove the LAN cable attached to your laptop. Verify that you can still access/connect/ping 192.168.3; 192.168.4; 192.168.1.5; and/or 192.168.1.6 from the laptop even without the LAN cable since you are now connected via WiFi.

If yes, connect that LAN cable to the Westell 6100 LAN port, move the other end from 1 of the WRT54GS ‘ 4 LAN ports to the WAN likewise at the rear of the LinkSys.

Verify that you can access the Internet from either computer. At this moment, you have not assigned a security method (WEP, WPA, MAC Filter). Your choice as to what security you want implemented but offhand I would suggest the simplest, MAC Filter since any other would affect speed of your connection.

Additionally, you may want to enhance you browser connection. In Mozilla, click on Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Network tab, Settings button, tick "Auto-detect proxy settings for this connection, OK, OK;
In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings button, check "Automatically detect settings", OK, Advance tab, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
In Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced tab, Network, Proxy server buttons, check "Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy, OK, OK.

Normally (and perhaps easier for some) would be using the DHCP and not using static. Experience has shown me that static proves to be more stable especially if WiFi is concerned and in your case, only 2 PCs.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
