Sounds like it may be a BIOS password, when you reboot do you get any thing on the screen? is there an option to "press DEL to enter setup" or similar?

If so go into the BIOS and see if the password can be reset or removed there.

If it is a bios p[assword, you may be able to clear the BIOS by removing the BIOS battery whith the power OFF

Cannot bypass first password

At boot hit f8 boot in safe mode and then go to control to user accounts. If you cant change your user password make a new user or use Hiren's BootCD to unlock any user passwords on that system.

I was given a compaq computer running Windows XP. It boots up to a previous user and is looking for that user's password. How can I reset password or access administrator account?

I would suggest you to try the following :

Boot the computer in safe mode.
Press F8 while booting the system, It will give you Windows Advance boot option, Select Safe mode and press Enter. You will see two accounts, Administrator and the Previous User's . Select the Administrator. If it allows you to log in, go to control Panel, User Accounts and delete the previous user's account and create a New user with your name. Reboot the computer in normal mode.

Hope this works. Please let me know if you need further Assistance. Your comments and ratings are highly appreciated.

Thank you for choosing Fixya

Unable to login to laptop due to forgotten login password

First thing you can try is:

1: When booting up the laptop Press F8 until you see a screen show that has an option to boot in "Safe Mode"
2: Once it has finished booting up you can Select Administrator and hopefully there is no password set.
3: If there is no password set then login as Administrator and goto "Control Panel", Select User Accounts and change your daughter's password to something she wont forget ;p

if that fails then you can try this

http://www.lostpassword.com/

Offers a program that resets your passwords.

Hope this helped.

Previous user apparently password protected Windows.

Well first off you can use the restore feature and it will only reinstall crucial windows files it won't mess with software that was already installed.

There are password recovery programs out there you would have to search for one and install the program onto a disc and boot of it (just follow the instructions)
