I had to run a recovery on my computer. Afterward all I get is a black screen with "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". HP said I cannot get a system disk after a computer is more than 5 years old. My computer is a 2003.
Where can I get a system disk?
Re: I had to run a recovery on my computer. Afterward...
You may be able to find a matching system disc for your machine model on eBay - that is where I would look. Should be very reasonable. Alternately, you can use any generic Windows XP disc to install, and then go to HPs support page and you should be able to easily find the drivers for your particular model. This may actually be the better method, since manufacturer system discs often include a bunch of extra unnecessary programs (a lot for advertising purposes) that slow down the system.

What operating system is on this machine ?
What do yo see after booting up ?
1. If it is not booting up and you do not see the selftest screens and it gives a number of beeps then shuts down: count the number of beeps, that can tell you what is wrong.
2.If it is finding a harddrive but then gives a black screen which says something like "operating system not found, insert disk" or "grub error, run grub recovery" then you might need a cd or usb drive to boot from.
Then run it on your computer:
NB. you might first need to change the boot order in the BIOS, press DEL or F10 (the right button is displayed during the selftest on screen somewhere) find BOOT ORDER or POWER UP ORDER in the BIOS and put CD drive in first position
If you have reinstalled the operating system and Microsoft Genuine Check gets bothering you: call Microsoft support and explain that you had to reinstall due to harddrive failure, you will be given a new key for your windows. I have done so several times after hardware failures and reinstalling, they always have given me a new key. But you will have to make clear it was due to hardware failure, f.i. new motherboard, harddrive failure.
First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.
When the Computer logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available orfails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. Ifyou do not have a set of Recovery Media, you may purchase the set onlinefrom the manufacturer.Note: If your computer does not havean internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be requiredin order to recover the Operating System using Recovery Media.
Restart the computer.
When the computer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.
Close the CD-ROM tray.
Refer to on screen instructions to select either CDROM or USB CDROM.
The computer will boot from the Recovery Media
When prompted for the Recovery CD, remove the System CD and insert the Recovery CD.
Note: Ifthere are multiple Recovery CDs, please insert the first of the Recovery CDs.
After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
You should have a recovery cd, it will allow you to reinstall Windows. If you don't have even that then either borrow one from a friend and use it with you key (the one on the sticker), or order a new disk by following this

Check and see if the hard drive came loose check the bios to see if it is recognized..It is saying there is nothing with an O/S on it and when you put the disk in it does not register a hard drive to restore..Check the hard drive and start the computer up and see if you can cancel the restore and start the laptop up regular..
If it happens that you are prompted by the following error message "DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER", "No system disk", it means that the computer did not find the operating system to start (boot).
Causes:
A diskette or CD has remained in the drive
Check out if any diskettes, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM are present in respective drives, remove them and restart your computer
The boot sequence is incorrect BIOS
Enter the BIOS setup of your computer and edit the boot (boot sequence) so that the computer starts primarily on drive C: A new hard drive was installed
In the case that a new hard drive has been installed, this message is quite normal. Just insert the correct CD to install the system (usually Windows), then restart, while making sure the CD-ROM is first in the defined in the BIOS setup as first boot sequence. The hard drive is unplugged
Open the system unit and check that power cable of the hard drive is properly connected. Corrupted system files
It may happens that some system files needed to boot the computer have been deleted /damaged or that the boot sector of the disc is damaged.
To determine this, start the computer with a system disk or CD-ROM installation of Windows (via the Recovery Console), and once started, type Dir C: to check if the contents of drive C: are accessible. If its ok then the problem comes from missing or damaged files, then you just have to run the command:
fdisk /mbr sys c:
Note that before any restoration of the boot sector with the command fdisk / mbr, (supposing that there is a virus), it is recommended to use an antivirus running under DOS, such as f-prot. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/166454/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/69013/en-us Damaged disk
If the hard disk or a partition is damaged: If it detected in the BIOS setup, there is a chance that it is not out of service. If it is, try reinstalling the system through the installation CD, in order to reformat or recover the partition using a utility.
If your computer has just been formatted, your computer might require you to insert the boot CD
to be able to run it. You might hence get the error message Disk Boot Failure- Insert disk and
press enter displayed on the screen every time you will try to run it. This might be linked
to:
* 1. The boot options not correctly set in BIOS * 2. A non bootable CD is found in your CD drive * 3. You do not possess any bootable device * 4. You have installed a new hard disk * 5. The hard disk is not properly plugged * 6. Your system files have been infected

You have formatted the hard drive (containing Boot Manager) using recovery disk 1. That's why the error message.
Just insert disk 1 again. Shut down the computer (press & hold the power button for a minute). Restart.
Follow the instructions that come up.
If it doesn't help, reseat the hard drive. (open the back cover, take out hard drive, reconnect it) Also you may go to BIOS (tap F1 while booting) and set the cd-drive as the first boot device.
If you have your original Windows install disk, you can boot off of that, and should be able to recover most of your files, assuming your drive has not died fully. Depending on how important your files are, you can send the drive to a drive recovery service. I did that a couple years ago, they were able to recover all my files but it was EXPENSIVE. $1200.
what operating system do you have currently? Windows XP?
