What is the black cartridge version that you are using on your Lexmark X125 printer? If you are inserting a photo cartridge on your printer, please follow these steps:
1. Remove the black cartridge and insert the photo cartridge. The printer LCD screen will display CARTRIDGE? NONE CHANGED. 2. Press the Options button to select NEW RIGHT and then press Start. The printer LCD screen will now display RIGHT CARTRIDGE?3. Use the Options button to select the STD PHOTO cartridge type and click Start. An Alignment page will then print. When the Alignment page is fully printed, the LCD screen will display CARTRIDGE ALIGN. 15 [00-30] A , where- 15 represents the straightest line on the page; - [00-30] is the value range you can select from, between 00 and 30 - A represents the line in each section. 4. Use the numbers on the keypad to select the number of the line you think is the straightest. As you press the number, the LCD will change to the next line automatically. First print a self test page on the printer and check if you have black print on it or not.
To do that Go to your printer :-
Press Setup button -->Go to print report-->hit ok--> use arrow keys and choose the self test page.--> hit ok.
If you have the self test page fine then try to make a black copy from the printer.
Put a black font printout on the scanner glass facing downwards. Press copy black
Check if you have the black ink working.
If yess then there is some thing on the system you are doing wrong. May be the printer properties needs to be set or some settings needs to be checked.
If no then try to clean he ink cartridge and try to align the cartridge on the printer.
To align Do this
Press setup-->use arror keys to navigate to tools -->and choose the option align cartridge or align printer.
If you do not find the option in the tools option try looking for it in the print report...
On the computer Go to printer under control panel and right click on the printer and go to print prefernces --> go to the TAB called colors and under color options -->choose print in greyscale--> and under that choose the Black only option. --> hit apply and then hit ok.
Your printer uses 4 cartridges: PGI-5 Black and CLI-8 (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow). Unless you have a slot for a fifth cartridge, CLI-8BK cannot be used in your printer.
As for installing new cartridges:
Turn your printer on.Open the printer's lid. The printer
will automatically move the ink cartridges to the center of the opening.
Unplug the printer's power supply cord from the electrical
outlet to avoid the risk of an electrical shock.
Remove the printer cartridges by first pressing down on the
top of each cartridge housing. Pressing down on the cartridge housings
will cause the top of each housing to automatically lift up, thereby
exposing the cartridges. Lift the cartridges out of each cartridge
housing to remove them.
Install the replacement ink cartridges by first removing the
orange safety tape located on either the top or the bottom of each
cartridge, depending on the particular type of cartridge. The safety
tape ensures that the cartridges do not leak ink before being installed.
To remove the tape, simply pull the orange tab on the end of each piece
of tape away from each cartridge. Position each cartridge into its
cartridge housing so that the printed words on top of the each cartridge
faces towards the front of the printer, then close the tops of the

for windows general make sure you folowed these steps:
Click Start, Programs, Lexmark Series.
Click Lexmark Control Panel.
Click Print Cartridge installation.
Depending on which cartridges you are using and which printer model you have, select Install Color Cartridge or Install Black Cartridge or Install Photo Cartridge.
Carefully remove the tape covering the printhead of the print cartridge. Important: Be sure to remove all of the tape. Do not touch the copper area on the back of the cartridge.
Insert the print cartridge into the print cartridge carrier.
Push the cartridge back until it clicks into place.
If the print cartridge moves loosely in the carrier, it is not locked into place. Repeat step 7.
Click the appropriate Cartridge Installed option in the printer software.
If you choose to install a new print cartridge, you will be prompted to align your print cartridges. The printer will print a page with a bi-directional alignment pattern. Follow these steps to align the cartridges:
On the printed test page, locate the number under the Bi-directional Alignment pattern that comes closest to forming a straight line.
Enter the number as the Bi-directional Alignment setting in the Alignment Cartridge screen.
You can also bypass the alignment. When the message for alignment displays on the display => Press Setup and Options (or Copy Options ) simaltanious.The last known alignment is used when the alignment is bypassed.
The following error message appears on the LCD panel on top of the printer after you insert a cartridge: Press enter to align cartridges . You press Enter , but the error message does not go away. The printer will not print. Solution To bypass the cartridge alignment, do the following:
Press and hold the Setup button.
Press the Options button. The printer should be ready to print.
If the print quality is unacceptable after bypassing alignment, follow the steps below until the error is corrected.
It Does keep asking if it fails to get it right, usually it fails to get scan of alignment page completed correctly because it fails to see one of the colours printed on its alignment page correctly,
I would guess that you should change colour cartridge as well (these I have seen deplete themselves trying print black when black ink is not present.
