How do I know when it is time to service my Living Air 880?

This is one of the first models manufactured by Alpine, and is at least 15 years old. It's pretty basic, however, and if it's maintained monthly or bi-monthly, it probably will just keep on going and going...like another little advertising icon says!
The two most important parts are the white plates with the screens attached, and the fan. If the machine is making strange squeeking or grinding noises, the fan needs oiling. Even if no noise is audible, the fan still needs oiling occasionally, like any fan in any appliance.
To:oil:
1) Unplug the machine.
Remove the front grid, gently but firmly pull off the fan blades, and

I just bought a used 880 and when running I see small "sparks" from the plate behind the fan. It looks like the spark you get when using a battery powered fly swatter. That is the best way to...

DO NOT RUN THE MACHINE WITH THE DEFECTIVE PLATE! The sparks indicate that the plate is either defective, wet, or dirty. You can try cleaning the plate, then inspecting it for flaws.
The plates (4" white ceramic squares with screen glued to center of each side) must be clean and inserted correctly.
1) Soak the plates in equal parts plain ammonia/water for 5 minutes. Scrub gently with a toothbrush or small veggie brush. Rinse well. Blow dry or air dry. DO NOT use a towel or paper to dry it off. Avoid touching the screen with your fingers.
2) Inspect the plate carefully for cracks, discoloration, broken wires, loose mucilage, burned areas, or visible dirt or bug parts (!). If the plate is flawed or corrupted, you need to order a new one from Vollara (formerly EcoQuest/Alpine) at 800-989-2299. Use #16618 for the referral number.
3) Clean the metal fingers with a cotton swab and alcohol.
4) Insert the plates firmly, making sure they go in on the tracks, and that the contact fingers rest firmly on the screen part.

The little flickering light is simply an indicator of power, and is normal.

880 alpine air (2) on upper level one in kitchen and one in laundry room. Question: I clean the purifiers about once per month and the problem is that there is no clean air smell any longer. They are...

The transformer may be burned out. This supplies the power to the contact points which send current through the plates. You can try ordering new plates, just to see if yours are just plain worn out! You're doing the right thing, by using ammonia/water, but they aren't made to last forever! Call Vollara (new name for EcoQuest) at 800-989-2299. Use #16618 if you're no longer in touch with the registered distributor who sold you the machines. If you still detect no clean air amell, the machines need a part which the company no longer handles. And they no longer manufacture the 880 or Breeze, which was its upgrade. Customer service will explain your options.

Do not know how to go about cleaning my alpine air filter its an 880. Where do i begin...cannot find the manual..or is there some place i can get a new manual?

Mine is older than yours. I rinse mine in the sink and rub it with my finger, if I have to. Let it air dry. It's easy enough to find a spot (put it in a full tissue box) that it will dry in. Can use a dish rack.

My Alpine Air 880 makes a sizzling noise. I turn the dial down and it gets better. Whats the problem?

The sizzling is the high voltage "bleeding" to ground inside of the collector module, or the high voltage electronic circuit.

First, unplug the unit and remove the module. Thoroughly clean all electrical contact points where the module makes connection. If it possible to operate the unit without the module in place, then replace all covers, plug the unit in, and attempt operation. If you continue to hear sizzling, then unplug the unit, remove covers, and continue to clean, digging deeper into the unit to find traces of accumulated dust/dirt. Also be on the lookout for burned areas in the plastic, around insulators, etc. High voltage is a mighty beast, and will easily track to ground, causing a sizzling noise.
If you don't find anything there, then take the modele and look for any tracking points on the insulators. Look very closely at the ionizer wires for accumulated lint, which creates little points where high voltage can bleed to ground from.
You may get popping of high voltage as well. When this happens, note the places where it occurs, and those places become suspect of causing the sizzling sounds.
Let me know what you find. These guys are cantanckerous at best.

Took the filter off to clean it and now it will not work. What is wrong?

Looking at it from the rear, there is a small switch on the right side. There is a plastic piece on the filter that has to push in on the switch to allow the unit to operate.

Not cleaning! plastic forks that run on the two wires broken

These forks aren't needed to operate the machine, as you know.
You can clean the grid wires with compressed air and electrical contact cleaner. But these units are very unreliable, difficult to impossible to repair, and there are no parts nor repair service available. They don't usually run very long. I'd have to say, as soon as it quits working, shop for an alternative ozone-generating air purifier.

I have a Living Air Purifier - Model Flair with Ecotech

You can download the manual online at http://www.ecoquestonline.net/ownersmanuals_web/flair_om.pdf

Basically let your nose be your guide. When you are right in front of the machine you can smell the fresh air. As soon as you walk in the house you should smell that fresh air smell for about 30 seconds and then it should go to the back of your senses. If not the setting on the machine is too high. Dial it back a notch and wait 24 hours before making another adjustment, until you have the right setting.

Hope this helps!

How do you know if it is working (fresh air) Ecoquest?

I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link or not, but I'm giving it a try.

Here is a link to the .pdf for the product manual for an Ecoquest FreshAir unit:

http://www.ecoquestintl.com/dlrdown/website_om/faom_62-00230.pdf

This is the one that has the 'away' mode on it.

Here's the main website where the product manual link can be found, it may help you find your other manual:

http://www.ecoquestonline.net/retail_products/fresh_air.asp

Hope this helps!
