Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook

1 Answer

Wireless network button not working.

The wireless networking button and the sound buttons above the keyboard on my Compaq V2000 laptop have stopped working since I reinstalled Windows (for an unrelated problem). It's not that I really need them going but without the wireless button I am unable to connect to the network at home.

I tried going to My Network Places and from Network Tasks choosing "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office". I ran through this process and it said it was successful, and the link to my other computer shows up in my network places, but when I try and open it I'm told it is not accessible - it seems like the wireless network has still not started.

I have been searching forums for weeks on this subject and still can't find any specific fix - please help!

Thanks - fixed part of the problem, the sound keys now work. Downloaded the other drivers that I think are relevant too. The wireless network button still shows no sign of working though.

Is there another was to turn on wireless networking without the buttons? It previously worked on this computer without trouble so I know it can be done.

On closer inspection it's a Compaq V2020AP, and I installed Windows XP and downloaded service pack 2 then 3.

When I go to device manager the only things under Network Adapters are:
    1394 Net Adapter
Realter RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

I've checked under all the other headings but can see nothing mentioning Intel or Broadcom that sounds like a wireless card. Not sure which drivers to get without knowing which card I have...

Another problem I've found since reinstalling Windows is that I only have about 2Gb left of my 40Gb hard drive. I've looked at every folder immediately inside the C drive and they add up to about 5 or 6Gb. I had a lot of files on the drive before the reinstall which I thought would have been wiped - is it possible they are still hiding somewhere and taking up space?

  • ogibbs Jul 04, 2008

Solved it! And of course by the most simple way - turns out I had an additional install CD of all the drivers, which got the wireless network back up straight away.

Still got the problem of almost no hard disk space though, any suggestions would be appreciated. Have tried a prorgam called partition magic to look at my partitions, I only have the one main one and another of about 7mb which I think is normal... ?

I found another program which shows exactly which folders are taking up how much space. It found that there's about 12gig of files and programs on C drive, and 200Mb free. It said there was an 'unknown' 28gig on there but couldn't identify what it was.

I can't remember if I reformatted. Do you think it's worth doing the install again and reformatting the drive?

Reformatted this time and it worked, all space accounted for! Thanks!

What operating system did you reload? Support for Compaq is under HP now.
You need to load the Compaq Quick Launch application. For XP, probably this one:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-31502-1&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=500508&dlc=en
Otherwise, go here and choose your EXACT model. V2000 is a bit generic; there are several sub models:
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=v2000
While you are at it, you should get all the other drivers you need from there, too. Lots of downloading, but it's worth it to take full advantage of all the features.

Does the wireless card show in the list under Device Manager? It seems there may be one of two wireless cards, a Broadcom and an Intel. There are also several support files under the Network section of the drivers and downloads.

Do you have bluetooth as well?

When I read the manual, it seems you may have to configure this button via some utility to tell it which wireless device it should control. Refer to Section 5-2.

Here is the manual, refer to section 1-6 and 5-2.

There are programs available that show you which directories are using the most space in pie chart format. Did partition magic show you all the 40 gig?

The 7 meg partition is normal. Did you reformat when you reinstalled windows? You may have a lot of files hidden in the temp directories.

If you right click each folder on the root of c and check the properties, it will show you the size of all the files. Check the c:\windows and c:\doc & settings, then you can narrow it down.

Hi!

Your Compaq V2000 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG wireles adapter. (doesn't support N, but that's not the point I think)

If your new network configuration is based on WPA/WPA2 encyption, this adapter has some known problems to establish a connection. It works great with WEP, but not so well with WPA.
Sometimes the issue can be solved by installing the latest versions of drivers and software for the wireless adapter.
If it still doesn't work, a known workaround is to disable via device manager all other network adapters in the computer (ethernet adapter), leaving active only the Intel Pro 2200 wireless adapter.

Hope it helped,

Bogdan

Theres no wlan

there is a button, some look like a satelite dish, some have other icons, look for this button and press it. sounds like you accidently turned off the wireless card. sometimes it can be a combination button that requires pressing function, alt or another key with it. If your post the model number I am sure we can tell you where to look. Thanks, hope this helps

Where is the switch to turn on my wireless connection I have a cn6000 compaq and it tells me my wireless switch is turned off where is it an how do I turn it on ?

Try pressing the FN+F2

If you have windows, try this. Go to Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Network Connections. Right-click on your wireless connection, and if there is an option to "enable," then enable it. Otherwise, it'll say "disable," which means that it's turned on.

There is a button above the keyboard to turn on Wireless

Hope it works :-)
