Connect it to a code reader scan tool. The engine light codes will tell you some of the reason, but Jeff's answer is far better than mine regarding how all this stuff works..

Check for any stored engine codes, this may give you an idea of any problems that may cause your complaint. Possible crank position sensor, cam position sensor or ignition module would cause a 'die in flight' situation.
Code 450 is for a problem with the pressure sensor for the EVAP system. The computer vents the gas tank to the vapor canister while the engine is running, and checks pressure in the system before and after venting. The sensor and circuit would need to be checked.
Take it to a place like Auto Zone and they will hook up their computer to it and tell you what the fault code is for free. Most common is a misfire which would indicate new plugs or wires.

Did you recently get gas? If the gas cap is not put back on and tightened it will set the the light.
the check engine light comes on when there is an issue with a sensor/sending unit/system/or something the pcm controls. The check engine light does not come on when there is a mechanical issue such as a bad lower intake gasket.
There are times when a mechanical problem can cause a sensor to read incorrectly and cause the check engine light to come on.
I would have the 2005 Chevy Impala's computer scanned for codes to see what is causing the check engine light to go on. It is not unusual for a 'miss' or an O2 sensor to go bad on such a high mileage vehicle.
Have it checked, though, in order to pinpoint the problem sooner.
