Buffalo router - have installed everything onto the desktop and net is working fine, but cant work out how to get the laptop to connect wirelessly!

Hi. Sorry for the lack of info!

    1) Dell Inspiron running Vista

    2) There was a WEP key automatically assigned which I have tried entering on the laptop whilst trying to manually setting up a network but still doesnt seem to work

    3) Yes, the WiFi indicator light was lit when i was trying to set it up

We've somehow managed to connect to someone elses WiFi (acidentally!!!) but when I search for available networks the laptop cannot seem to locate our router even though all the software has been loaded onto the desktop and the appropriate ready lights are showing on the router. Will I also need to install the software on the laptop? The instructions that came with it tell you nothing about how to actually achieve a wireless connection, hence the confusion!

Thanks for trying to help, greatly appreciated!!

Help us help you...

1. What brand and model of laptop?
2. Did you put an WEP key on the buffalo wireless router?
3. Are you sure the WiFi is turned on, on your laptop?

ok - Since your laptop has found and logged onto another wifi network, there is nothing more to do with your laptop (till at least it sees it).

Now onto your router, what make and model is it and we will go on from there. Your router itself may not have the wireless turned on, or is not working properly.

Once I know what model your router is, we will go over setting on it with you...

Open a web browser window and enter 192.168.11.1 in the URL field and press enter. You will get a prompt to enter a username and password to access your router settings. You should enter "root" (without quotes) as the username and leave the password field blank, then click OK.

Make sure there is a wireless radio check box is checked. (should look like box below)

Wthout this done, your laptop will be unable to see the wireless network.

Can only connect 1 computer to router

You might need to check if your laptop is able to get a valid IP address when connected wirelessly to the router. You can go to the Control Panel then click on network connections and look for wireless network connection. Right click the wireless network connection then click properties. Click the support tab and there you will see the IP address. You should not be getting 169.254.x.x. Where X represents numbers.

An IP address is very important. Make sure you're getting a correct IP address and it should be the IP address provided by your router. Without a valid IP address, you won't be able to get onlinwe. Your wireless connection can tell you that its connected eventhough its not getting a valid IP address.

Cannot get onto internet

disable the firewall on control panel.
check all the properties boxes on the network
connections and make sure firewall is disabled.

access the router setup and make sure that VCI is set to manual
and that you enter in the settings yourself (eg: 0,38 for aol broadband). Don't leave VCI, etc on auto, the router can't handle it.

I have a Buffalo g54 Wireless router, it keeps loosing wireless connection. Works fine when directly next to the router but when you move away it looses connection.

Buffalo wireless routers are **** and never work right, i suggest you go out and buy either Netgear or Lynksis routers as these are the best, unfortunealeley there is no fix for this a the range of the routers are limited, stick to brand name equipment

kind regards and please don't forget to rate us

Buffalo G45S router

make sure that there's a wireless card installed in the laptop. if it has, check that it's installed properly on device manager. if it's installed properly check if the wireless capability of the router is enabled. you can access the router's web user interface for you wireless settings. if you have done evrything but your laptop won't still connect, try to isolate the problem by connecting another laptop to your router wirelessly, if another will connect porperly to the router, it means that there's somethign wrong with your laptop or the other way around

hope this'll help you and just ask me if you have other concern

ciao!

You may simply have incompatibility issues, there now where near as problimatic as they used too but still exists. First off make sure that when you try to connect that you have the right security settings, (if used the disk from the router or had somebody install it you should have written it down). When configuring your router always do it with a hard wire connected so as you don't drop yourself every time you change a wireless setting.
Take your laptop to a free wifi hotspot as way to make sure that your wireless card actually works. But if you can see your network it sounds more like a security setting issue.
