When saving images from Nikon

When saving images from Nikon D40x to hard drive on PC, I am losing typically 40% of the data - e.g an image of 5 MB is being compressed to 3MB. If I download to Picture Project the image is ok, but as soon as I try to save to a memory stick or hard drive for printing, I am losing data and therefore reduced quality of image. Can anyone help?
