I cannot get my windows xp computer to shut down on its own I have to do it manually

The program you suggested is not a free program and I am not in a position to pay almost $100 for a virus scan. I thought that when I had paid for my session the services were free.

I have by the way got my pc to shut down and to restart and since your people were unable to help me I feel that I should not be charged.

Yours Sincerely. Pauline M Wilcox. aka Tuppenny1940

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Your computer overheated, it needs a service/clean. With the vacuum cleaner. See my guide to get it working again, it is entitled My Computer is not turning on!!! Is it dead!!! No POST!!!

Install more fans, it needs cooler air to get into the chassis.

Take care!

HOW DO I SHUT DOWN MY COMPUTER

In XP click the start menu box in the bottom left of the screen then click shut down. In vista click the windows globe at the bottom left, hover the mouse over the sideways pointing arrow in the bottom right of the pop up box then select shut down in the box that opens. In Windows seven click the windows globe in the bottom left then select shut down from bottom right corner of the list.

Hope that helps

When I shut down my computer, I think that it is shutting down completly. All lights are off indicating that it is shut down. Then a small blue window will appear and will say "Entering Power Safe Mode"....

If you are turning off your computer by pressing the front panel power button, it is probably just putting Windows to sleep but not shutting the computer off. If your computer has Windows Vista, the default is to hibernate and not shut down even if you shut down through Vista. The "power save" message you see is coming from the monitor, which is letting you know it isn't getting a signal from the computer anymore but the power is still on. Windows will start up again from sleep mode if someone or something moves the mouse or presses a key.

The solution is to make sure the computer is actually shut down. In Vista you can do this by clicking the arrow near the power icon on the Start menu. This gives you the option of shutting down instead of hibernating. In XP, shut the computer down using the start menu shutdown option instead of the computer power button. Then the power will shut down completely.

Windows XP will not shut down.

I don't know if you've tried this yet,but here it is just in case.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance>Power Options>In the Power Options Properties dialog box, on the Power Schemes tab, click the Power schemes drop-down list and select the power scheme that most closely matches how you use your computer.
adjust the System standby and System hibernates settings if you are not happy with the default selection. On the Advanced tab, you can adjust the default behavior of the power buttons on your computer. Click Apply>OK

Please rate this a fixya

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc. Locate the nVidia Driver Helper item and right click it. Select Properties. Set the startup value of the service to “Manual” or “Disabled”.
Your computer should shut down normally now.

Installed a video card xfx on windows xp pro now computer shut of

its a normal process when you installed a new Video Card. the only problem there is, if its not compatible with the chipset of your main board. it will create an error and slow down your system/computer later on. to check it, see the manual of your main board and find what its chipset.

EMachines PC that has not yet been thrown out the window, but....

If this computer came with XP Home, and you don't have a disc, then they would have put the restore files in a separate partition on the hard drive. Do you have the manual for the pc? It's possible to recover your system without losing everything. What happened when you used the recovery disks and XP Pro?
