Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDF-55WF655 36" Rear Projection HDTV

WEGA KDF-60WF655 HAVE A 2 I/2 YEAR OLD SONY GRAND WEGA KDF-55WF655 . THERE ARE MULTI COLORED VERTICAL LINES RUNNING THE WIDTH OF THE SCREEN. THERE IS NO PICTURE EXCEPT FOR THE LINES. ALSO NO RESPONCE AS FAR AS MENU, OR ANY "ON SCREEN TEXT" ect. IT WORKED FOR SOME TIME THE OTHER DAY BUT MY LUCK, THE POWER WENT OUT...NEVER GOT IT TO WORK SINCE. I NOTICED THAT PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING, THE UNIT TOOK LONG TO TURN FIRE UP. I DON'T THINK IT'S WORTH SPENDING $1000 OR $1500 TO FIX AS IT SEEMS LIKE THE VIDEO ENGINE HAS HAD PROBLEMS. FROM WHAT I READ ON THE NET.

It may be a fault at the line output transistor(loptr) it has tree legs and is usually bolted/clipped to a metal heatsink plate to keep it cool.
Its usually very near the LOPTX flyback transformer
Find the collector (middle leg) and follow the printed circuit till you get to the scan coil plug (looking for burnt pins as you go).
The width scan circuit consists of three main bits, the scan coils, the "S correction capacitor", and the linearity coils, they are all connected in series (any order)
First check the scan coils, The connections , (both ends) and the small pcb on the scancoils, then measure the resistance of them, 1 to 5 ohms is ok
Now find and test the S corrections cap ,its usually 220nf to 1uf at 250v-400v , look for burnt ends and/or swollen case
Now find the Linearity/width coils, these are fairly big , sometimes with an adjustable core

They measure very low zero on my meter. 1 or 2 ohms

THe multi colored lines are a good indication that the logic board is confused. This unit is clearly no longer under warranty unless you purchased the extended warranty. I would open up the back and reseat all of the cables and connectors. Small amounts of dust and/or dirt can cause the loss of signal inside. Report back here with any results.

The optical block is still available at a cost of $1122.24 with a DUD value of $530.00 which makes the final cost $592.24. (DUD value is the amount you get back once the bad part is received back at the factory.)

Let me know the results and what you wish to do.

As much as I'd like to agree with centralhigh's post, the problem you are having does NOT qualify for the reimbursement. You can call Sony and try, but don't expect it. If they agree, all the better.

I'm sorry that you were unsuccessful at getting Sony to assist you with the repair. As I initially stated, the part is available for the net cost of $592.24 (plus shiping). At this point, there is little you can do other than replacing the optical block. Since this is the part that provides the video signal to display, no display will work without this functioning correctly. That is why you could not see the menus etc.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Maclean, this is an LCD projection set and therefore does not have the traditional setup. The problem is within the light engine that is not field repairable. The only option is to swap out the module and return it to the manufacturer where it will be rebuilt.

Problem for Sony Grand WEGA KDF-55WF655. Hello,

5 times Red LED blinks means Lamp Driver Error. (KDF-55WF655)
2 possible reasons, either Lamp is gone or Ballast Supply got bad.
Replace lamp first, in most cases it solved the problem.
How old is this TV and did you replaced lamp recently?
Thanks.

Blue and black vertical lines over the picture

Hello,

This problem is most likely related to the Optical BLock of the TV. There is a board, called the C board, that does all of the thinking for the optics of the television, and there are tests that can be run to confirm this.

Try pressing the MENU button (or WEGA GATE, HOME) on the remote control. If the menu that pops up has the same lines running through it, then it is definitely the Optical Block. If not, that doesn't rule it out completely. You can try Sony customer support, and they should be able to run you through some tests to confirm the exact cause of the problem.

Hope this helps you...

This seems to be common problem with Sony projection tv. I have the KDF-E50A10 that lasted only 2 years. It's sitting in a corner now until I figure out what to do with it. I am not going to spend another grand to repair it!! Never Sony again.

Authorized sony repair center told me the problem was the Q Box. Ever heard of this? Part runs about 300 bucks. TV is out of warrenty as it is 2 years old. Do you think it is worth it to fight sony and get them to replace the part or just fix the TV?

Part Number is A1167541A, service rep called it a Q Box in the diag, however the web says its the b block assmy.

read this if you think it's the same problem
