Question about RCA TruFlat 27F520T 27" TV

8 Answers

This thing is possessed.

TV turns itself on and off. It also goes through the menu that presets the channels. Then the only way to finally turn it off is to unplug it. The unit is about 4 years old and has never done this before. Checked the remote, removed the batteries, changed for fresh ones. Tried spraying bottled air into buttons (Dust?). If I depress and hold menu button TV holds to one station but you cannot change volume levels or anything else. Is this worth fixing?

Yes, we started experiencing the same problem recently, and I thought about changing the battery but did'nt see sense in this, can anyone tell what the problem my be and how to fix this issue, this television is only about 3 years old.

  • mterry1202 Jul 20, 2008

Yes, we just started having this problem with our tv. It just changes channels or turns on and off by its self. We usually unplug it for a couple minutes and plug it back in. Then it goes through searching for channels for a minute and once it finishes that it goes back to normal. But now its starting to do it more and more.

Wow it is great to hear I am not the only one who has this exact same problem. Has anyone figured out how to fix this yet? If so please email me and let me know. Thanks

What a nightmare! My RCA TruFlat is possessed as well! It just started last week...it turns itself on/off...constantly searching through all the channels, etc. Why is this happening now to all of us? Check the "born on" date on the TV...maybe we all have the same group/set of TruFlats? Mine was made Jan 2006 in Mexico...anybody else?

  • Anonymous Sep 23, 2008

My friend has the same problem with his TV. He bought a brand new main circuit board and installed it. This circuit board includes a new Flyback, eeprom.

What ever this problem is, it has nothing to do with something going bad!!!!!

My tv also turns on and off by itself ,no remote functions seem to work possessed is the only way to describe it. now however I think a recall or refund for repair is a good option Rodger monroe mi

  • Anonymous Dec 12, 2008

Mine started doing the same thing two nights ago. It turns on and off by itself then it will say "searching please wait" on the screen. It does that for a while then it just turns on and off several more times. I have to unplug it in order for it to stop. Has anyone found out how to fix this?

  • gliterbechba May 18, 2009

I have the same problem with an RCA tv! It too is about 4 years old. At first, it would turn on and off constantly by itself, and the remote has no effect on the TV. It would do this for a few days, and then be fine for a month or so. Now, it is completely possessed! It turns on and off constantly, the remote is useless, and now all it does is constantly scan the channels...so it's basically a worthless piece of junk...the only way to get it to stop scanning is to unplug. Replugging it in now has no effect either.

Is there any recall/way to repair?

I found the easy solution to this! I was having the same exact problem with the channels scanning constantly and the TV turning on and off, and I was almost ready to throw the TV out! My boyfriend bought this TV for me about 4 years ago also, so these problem TV's all seem to be about the same age, 4 years old. It truly seemed like my TV was possessed. As a last ditch effort before junking the TV, I Googled the problem, and here's what I read that actually WORKED:

I unscrewed the 6 screws on the back of the TV, three on each side, and pulled it apart from the plasic outer coating from the inside wired and parts as much as I could. Where there were some plastic zip cords holding wires together, I cut with scissors to get better access to the flat control board at the back bottom part of the tv. It was kind of hard to see and get at because everything was attached, and the gray outer plastic shadowed the inside, so I used a flashlight. Everything I read on the internet said to find a cord that said "Key " and cut it, but I couldn't find that cord, and it was too shadowy and dusty in there anyway. I read that the cord would connect the controls to the larger control panel, so I pretty much guessed and looked for the cord that connected the upper channel and volume and menu controls to the back. It was pretty obvious where these buttons on the top were connected to the back, so I just pulled the one main cord connecting these to the green part in the back out, like pulling out a plug. IT WORKED! I plugged the tv in to make sure, and scewed the scews back in!

The TV now only works with the remote, but who cares? I fixed it! I was ready to throw it out!!!

You should also know that I am a girl who has no experience with these kinds of things, and when this worked, it felt like a great sense of accomplishment! I fixed my own tv!

Thanks Gliterbechba !!! I had the same problem today, TV turning off and on seconds apart. Followed your advice and found the wire connecting the manual controls on the TV to the circuit board and unplugged it. Works fine now. I always use the remote anyway so I won't miss the manual buttons. Thanks again and to the others with same problem, this is your fix.

Gliterbetchba's comments were very helpful. However I did not have two seperate wires for the IR remote sensor and my buttons. I had to find the wire that was labeled key, and I cut it and it solved the problem. Again, this disables the buttons on the tv itself however the TV still works fine with the remote. The wire is not labeled key on the wire itself but on the circuit board. In my case it was the 2nd wire in of the 5 wires. Getting the small circuit board with the buttons out was a bit tricky because access was not easy. But you will need to take it out to find the appropriate wire. Goodluck, hopefully this will help you fix your TV.

The same was true for me. The wire that needed to be disconnected ran between the big main circuit board in the middle and a little one that held the "back end" for the buttons on the front of the TV. There were five wires to choose from, and I had to unscrew that little circuit board to see the labels as well.

I also learned that it was the "second wire." As in, if you stand in front of the TV screen, look down at where the wires plug in, and count from the left, it's the second wire. It was also marked with very looooooooooooong blue dashes to distinguish from the others.

Be careful choosing which wire to cut on your own TV. They easily could have started using different hardware, markings, or arrangement in the factory. Don't use my description of the wire as your only source unless you're feeling very bold!

I have an rca 27in 27f412t same as 27f520t and I have been going through components and checking them one by one and so far everything takes me back to the EPROM ,untill I can get voltage specs from a scematic, I can only speculate that the EPROM CHIP is a cheep design or they have to high of voltage and current levels to the chip. Most likely the chip was made very cheep thus destin to fail, lately most of the electronics I've been repairing have had failed chips causing the problem, which most of the time they dont sell but the whole board they will, which also makes it hard to do buisness!
I will be back with an exact answer once I have completed my investigation and testing.

I had the same problem. i opened the t.v. took out the circuit board to the buttons and broke off the little resistor things to all the buttons. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK THE ONES LEADING TO THE IR LIGHT. if you can find another button board thatd be a better fix. let me know if you do please. anyway put it back together and use the remote from now on and it wont turn itself off anymore. my guess is one of the buttons shorted out or something.

ok i am typeing this right out of the book/
operating your tv: Once you have connected your tv to an anntenna or cable system, plugged the tv in, and put batteries in the remote, you are ready to use the tv. the first thing you should do is program your tv so it memorizes all of available analog& didgital channels.PROGRAMING YOUR TVS CHANNEL MEMORY: your tvs memory determines the channels thet are available using the "up ch down" buttons. if a channel is not in memory . you can tune to it with the numbeer buttons, but not with the up and down buttons . follow these steps to program your tvs memory:
1) Preset
press the MENU button twice to enter preset menu

To memorize all available analog and didgital channels
press the ch down button to highlight FULL SCAN then press VOL.+ to begin channel scaning, the channel scanning starting with analog channels then to didgital channels. after your tv finishes memorizing the channels, it will return to normal tv viewing. I hope that this fixes your problem thats just the main section on the programing part so if you need further info just ask!

Stuck on channel 2, "No Signal" and snow

Two things may be at play here. The tv might be only programmed for reception on channel 2 and will need to be re programmed to receive other channels.
Also try some basic troubleshooting on the remotes. Start with the remote that came with the tv. Replace the batteries try the "MENU" button. If you can get into the menu try to "autoprogram" the TV

TV turns on & off by itself. Channels also change by themselves.

Make sure your remote is totally away from the set.
Make sure the buttons on the set are not sticky
If both of those are ok, it's your E-Prom in the set. RCA's are notorious for this, not a major repair, maybe $75-100. The 8 leg e-rom is only about $6.00
