You will need to get a second dvd player locally to play those movies. Some DVD players allow you to change region codes but limit you to 5 changes, it locks in on the 5th.

Panasonic DMR-EZ48V Dvd unit said disc was scratched/dusty - so would not record. Tried a newly opened DVD disc - same problem. Tried a pre-recorded DVD that had previously been played on this machine...

I would suggest since this is just out of warranty/guarantee as you say, try a DVD laser lens cleaner (these look like DVDs but they are for shifting surface dust off the laser lens in these drives (without the need for you to worry about opening them up). If the recorder suggests dirty discs, the laser probably has a speck of dust on it - you cannot see this speck, but the device can.

Do not use CD/DVD lens cleaner discs - those are supermarket products designed for CD/DVD players, not recorders or DVD-ROM drives in a PC. I recommend a true DVD lens cleaner kit - you may be able to obtain this through Panasonic or similar electrical outlets (like where you originally purchased the combo). These 'specific cleaners' are cheap, but unlike CD/DVD cleaners, these will not damage your unit.

Hopefully it is nothing more than a bit of stubborn dirt stuck on the lens inside the drive or anything more serious.

Thank you for your prompt response. We returned the above-mentioned purchase, as their directions were the absolute worst we have ever read. Also, your agreement was formidable, and the price for your services were steep for our pocket book.
