Going inot the router configuration page and reserving your computer with a specific IP address would resolve this issue, If you have never gone into the router config page, it would be reccomended that you not do this, and have a computer savvy person with networking experiance do this for you.

another solution would be releasing and renewing your IP address in the command prompt on your computer

in command prompt, type : ipconfig /release ENTER then ipconfig /renew to renew your ip address, this can be done rather than resetting the router everytime

Hi,

Is the laptop detecting any wireless networks in the area? if yes then it means that the wireless card is ok if not make sure that the wireless is turned on on your laptop.

I the laptop detects wireless networks in the are then we should check the settings on your system or something that could be interfering with the wireless connection on your system,
what are the error/s when trying to connect wirelessly?

Tis can be multiple things regarding wireless, if the error is windows was unable to conenct to wireless evice then try recreating the wireless network on your laptop in network and sharing center if you have win7 on the laptop, network conenctions if you have XP.

I the laptop connects to the router but does not get internet acces then better check you routers network key if it is correct in your laptops settings, also check your IP address if it is correct if you IP starts with 169... then have a bad IP address on your laptop, go to the command prompt type ipconfig /release, then press enter, then type ipconfig /renew then enter to renew your ip address, hoping that the IP address changes it should begin with 192...

I can't get an internet connection thru the router, it says that there is a connection but as soon as I click on IE the connection is lost. The IE does work when its directly connected, this only started...

  1. Release and renew your IP address
  2. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.

  3. Click Run... on this menu.

  4. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.

  5. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).

  6. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

  7. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).
Tips:
  1. If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig /release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3.

  2. To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically.
Also, make sure you are typing in the correct encryption key.

Can't connect with my router

The laptop CAN NOT have the same IP address of the desktop because is another station.
The IP address is generated automatically from your wireless router, one different for each computer that you have on the network.

For that reason you have to renew the ip on your laptop.

No Internet

ISP's have different requirements for connecting a router to their hardware. One required me to enter a static IP address, another requires acceptance of a dymanic IP address and a third uses dynamic IP addresses and requires a PPPoE logon from the router and a configuration change to their modem to switch it to a bridge, and a fourth I have read about require a reboot of their modem device to recognise changes in the MAC address (assigned to the network adapter) of the attached device (router). I am sure these are not all the variations possible, Requirements for router connections specifically the WAN side of the router are specific to your ISP. Often in their help or support areas they either have FAQ's or help pages to explain the requirements or an online technician available through chat who can tell you what is required. Often however it is up to you to be able to perform then necessary configuration tasks (especially on you hardware) to make this happen. I may be able to provide assistance of you identify you internet provider including local provider companies and geographic location (city / State) in some cases to determine their policies and requirements for attaching routers to their equipment.

Once you determine this connect the router and get a wired connection to work assuming the router has ethernet ports.

Then test an unencrypted wireless connection

When that works consider the following:

or general wireless security see
