I can't find the reset button which will start the brushes rotating after shoelace caught in roller.

Try finding the end of the shoelace and slowly pull it to see if it unravels from around the brush. Please post the make and model number of your vacuumn.

There are a number of reasons why your brush roller has stopped moving. General maintenance to your vacuum is crucial and will help it work at peak performance.

your gonna need to remove bottom plate and take a sharp knife or scissors and cut the string close to the brush then peal off. might need to replace belt at this time. just pull out brush roll and remove belt then match it up with new one and put it back together,

Your DC24 is equipped with a safety device which shuts off the brushbar if it becomes tangled with a shoelace, rug fringe, etc. After checking the cleaner head and brushbar are free of obstructions, you'll be able to reset it as shown in the video below.

Please note, the brushbar will never rotate when the machine is standing in the upright position, so ensure it's reclined into the vacuuming position before testing it.

The brushes on the roller are driven by a wide, short rubber belt. These belts get old, worn, overheated, and break periodically.

It should be a fairly simple matter to unscrew & remove the plate, revealing the belt and roller assembly. You can get a replacement belt at Sears or nearly any vacuum shop.

While replacing the belt, it would be a good idea to take scissors or a knife (careful!) and remove the hair & other material that's wound around your roller. One thing that can cause a belt to break is when you're vacuuming & accidently pick up a string, a shoelace, a piece of cord... you know how fast that gets wound around the brush roller and locks it up? At that point, the belt is still trying to rotate the roller (which won't rotate)... and within seconds, the belt will get extremely hot. This can cause it to break, or reduce its life significantly.

This should be an easy fix, requiring nothing more than a replacement belt and a screwdriver. Good luck!

Shoelace is probably lodged in the roller somewhere...you'll need to take the cover off as if you were changing the belt and look at the roller to see where the lace is and remove it ...if you don't remove it n try to run the lace out then you risk burning up a belt

Take the bottom plate off and check the belt. Also, rotate the brush by hand - it should turn with only a moderate resistance from the belt, or very little if you take the belt off. If it is hard to turn, or if the belt is stripped-out right where it goes around the roller pulley, one of the roller bushings is stuck. In that case you'll have to remove the roller and clean or replace the roller and bushings.

It's possible that the problem is actually in the blower, but most of the time a roller bushing or a foreign object caught under the roller is the culprit.

I would try turning the brush by hand to see if there is any resistance. I'm not aware of a "reset" switch that is end user accessible. If the vacuum still has suction, make sure you are using it on a carpet. The brush doesn't turn on wood or vinyl flooring.
