Where can I buy a new reservoir for my cartier lighter

I've seen spare tanks come up on eBay from time to time, for $30 - $50. If not, picking up a beat-up Cartier on the cheap just to remove and use its tank is an idea. Cartier does not sell spare parts of any kind (other than flints), so if your lighter needs a new tank they will probably insist you get a complete maintenance service, which can cost up to $300.

I have a dunhill lighter pat. #3910750 des. pat. #235456. When I fill it with butane, it leaks out of the top of the lighter. What is causing this?

Sounds like the valve that regulates the gas flow is sticking in the open position even when the lighter is not in use. Try spraying a light machine oil like WD40 on the gas jet aperture and any other moving part whilst your at it. Wipe excess oil from the lighter and leave for several minutes for the oil solvents to evaporate. Light the lighter a few times in rapid succession to enable the oil to penetrate. If the oils done it's job the gas should no longer leak.

I want to buy a Cartier lighter but I want to make sure it,s real. How do I look up the serial number?

To look up the steel ligter serial number is very easy ,I specialize in buying and selling Cartier watches. I've seen fakes with all the correct marks and a serial number, but that doesn't mean they are legitimate. If the watch was registered by Cartier when it was sold or if it has been sent in to Cartier for service Cartier will be able to verify it is authentic, but be aware that if the watch was not originally sold in North America or was not registered when sold (fairly common) it can still be authentic. Some sellers offer the Cartier quartz model for sale and only state that the watch has a quartz movement, but fail to mention if it has a Cartier quartz movement. If it has a replacement movement in it the watch is technically authentic, but not original and is not worth as much as one with an original or a genuine Cartier replacement movement. The biggest mistake I've seen amateur Cartier buyers make is using the Cartier micro-script signature on the Roman numeral to verify authenticity. Indeed this is a good indicator, but not the best indicator as there were many Cartier watches produced prior to the technology required to make the micro-script possible and not all Cartier watches have Roman numerals for the dial to have the micro-script signature. Furthermore, the micro-script is not always located at the same place and if the dial has been refinished it may not appear at all. Another common problem is actually caused by language differences, i.e. "all original versus "authentic". A watch can be authentic without being all original. Unless someone has owned the watch since it was new and it has never left their sight it is impossible for them to state the watch is "all original" as a part could have been replaced at some point in time -- even without their knowledge. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seller even if you have to pay slightly more money. -- Cartier_Specialist

I need to buy a butane tank for my Cartier lighter from the 80's, Cartier wont sell me one unless I agree to repair the entire lighter. So where in NYC can I find a place to purchase a tank?

If you can't find a used reservoir tank on eBay then you'll have no choice but to have Cartier service the lighter. Nobody sells new ones other than Cartier.

Lighter was dropped and the gas reservoir leaks continuously

Gas leaks in a lighter most commonly come from one of two places: the refill port, where you charge the lighter, and the exit port, where the gas exits to be burned.
To confirm where the lighter is leaking, try immersing the refill port in some water. If the lighter is charged and you see bubbles, that's the source of the leak. If you don't see a leak there, try holding the top of the lighter briefly under water to see if it bubbles there. Because electronics may be present at the burn port of the lighter, you want to make this immersion as short as possible. You also want to let the lighter dry completely before attempting to light it again, so you don't accidentally short-circuit something. If you're really worried about shorting it out, you can dab a bit of a soapy solution on the burn port with a Q-Tip instead of immersing the whole lighter tip in water.

Imagine the refill port like a bicycle valve--when you push down to open it, gas can flow in (or out). When you release pressure, that port is supposed to close up again completely. If it is not closing correctly, you can try to look for a piece of something--a shard of plastic or metal, a tiny grain of sand--that is preventing it from closing. However, because this valve is pretty well protected, it's less likely to be the source of the gas leak than the burn port.
The burn port is opened and closed by a mechanical switch. Possibly, a little door flaps open or you push a lever. Each of these triggers opens the burn port, and letting go of the control is supposed to let it close again. If you dropped the lighter on its head, it's possible that the linkage controlling things may have gotten bent or even broken. In that case, the gas port may no longer be closing properly.
The bad news is that once you have diagnosed your gas leak, you don't have a great many repair options. It may be possible to repair a bent or disconnected control at the lighter head, but it is rarely cost-effective to do so unless you simply have to unbend or re-align existing parts. Repair of the refill port, because it likely requires replacement of the gas storage tank, is also usually not cost-effective.

The reservoir tank can be the bane of existence for a Cartier lighter owner. Unlike most butane lighters which have gas tanks integral to the lighter, Cartier utilizes a user removable tank. Cartier only warrants the tank for two years. I've also seen tanks that say 12 months. New Cartiers come with one spare tank.
