Hi, my dell 1400 DVD/RW drive is not detected and can't be opened. When i restart, the lights(LED) blinks a few times like normal. This means that the drive is getting power. How ever, it is not detected in windows. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

possible failed CD drive or bus on motherboard.

In MY Computer, check to see if the DVD drive icon is there.
Try a different DVD or CD brand
Check the sata or IDE cable connection to the rear of the drive and also the security of the power rail

Your IDE/SATA cable seems to be loose. Please open the case and remove and refix the cable.

Check your system BIOS whether it is Detected there, if no, Shutdown your system, Press your CD-Rom drive towards the system firmly (Incase its making a partial contact), and restart your system. If Yes, then Start your system, Right-Click on my computer, go to properties, Device Manager, DVD/CDRom Drives. and click on it. if your CD Rom Drive is not detected there, then on the Device Manager Screen, click on Action, Scan for hardware changes, your system should detect it automatically. But if its already there, right-click on it, Uninstall it and do the scan system for hardware changes again. It should solve the problem like that.

i have the same problem ,but when i restart my pc ,i put the disk it can read without a doult .The problem is your disk drive can't read disk when it on windows mode ,using dos and it just fine,some kind of trouble appear cause i burn too much disk in a time and it can't read next time i open computer .May be your windows problem just restart wins then put the disk in ,if it appear the green light it mean it's reading then the green light off it's mean it had identify the disk and does read it

open the pc and check the IDE cable and power cable for this drive if you only have 1 drive then the jumper should be on master . CD-rom drive and DVD-rom drive should connect to master on the jumper, CD-RW and DVD-RW should connect to slave on the jumper that if you have 2 drives on your pc. If you still have problem after you checked all these cable and jumper connection than problem maybe inside the drive check it open the drive to see if there is nothing stuck inside the drive and clean the laser light.

you have a faulty disk inserted in the drive. Restart the computer and continuously press eject while the pc is booting, it should eject then.
