Canon ZR950 video transfer problem

How do i transfer video to the computer with a Canon ZR950 camera? I don't have a firewire, and only have a USB cord. The manual is a useless pile of ****, and it is no help whatsoever. Is it possible, or am I not going to be able to transfer video?

I have a similar problem...I bought the camera without doing enough research and did not know that I had to have the firewire connection. Well, I thought I was lucky after I discovered the problem because my laptop has a 1394 connection. BUT...I can't seem to get Windows Movie Maker to capture video from the camera even with the firewire connection. I hook it up and begin capture, I get *exactly* 3kb transferred and then capture stops. Everytime. The camera continues to play but no video is transferred. I'm about ready to throw this thing against the wall...hopefully, I can convince B&H to take the camera back...we'll see. Good luck!

Greetings reubnick,

Unfortunately, the Canon Z950 only offers transfer to your pc via firewire (Firewire/IEEE 1394 DV Terminal). Therefore your computer would need to have a firewire port.

One other option is to utilize a standalone system to plug your camera in to transfer video. Here an example of one unit: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8470923&productCategoryId=abcat0504007&type=product&tab=1&id=1184768699303#productdetail

I hope this helps!

My canon mv30i doesnt have a usb so i cant film and so put it on my pc :(

Purchase USB to 4-Pin 1394 FireWire Adapter cable. This will be very slow to transfer but should work and is a cheap solution.

Best solution of course is to buy and fit a FireWire port and cable to your desktop computer ( if that's what you are using ) and use that to download your video using the camera's FireWire port as intended.

I have a nv-gs140 with a usb cable. I can transfer pictures to my pc - but I don't know how to transfer the video tape to the pc?

You must connect using a firewire cable to the camera firewire port and computer. Firewire may also be called iLink or IEEE1394a.
Open Windows Movie Maker for PCs or iMovie using a Mac.
Any other video editing application will also work.

I hear that these firewire to usb connectors don't work for video transfer anyway.

You can get an add-on Firewire interface card that fits in a slot on the PC's expansion (PCI) bus. This will come with a driver for the card. You shouldn't need any driver for the camera. My camera (a Samsung) is controlled by the Windows Movie Maker program that came with Windows XP. This will cause the camera to rewind and play, and takes in the video to a file.

How do you transfer video from a canon ntsc zr85 to a computer?

Go to this link. In the search window in the center of the screen, type "upload video to computer" and click on the Search button. There are several options to choose from regarding pointers and instructions. Note that video can only be transferred by Firewire, so you need a Firewire cable, a computer that is Firewire compatible, and software on your computer that can edit video. (The USB cable and the software that came with your camera can only handle still images you take with your camera, stored on the MMC/SD card.)

I recorded a MiniDV with a HD camera the Canon HV30 to be specific. When trying to play it back on my Canon zr950 i get an error message. Will my tape only playback on an HD video camera? What do I do?

Canon ZR950 is an older Standard Definition camera that records in DV format, and does not recognize HDV format recorded by HV30.

HV30 can be switched to DV format, which should be playable on ZR950.

This camcorder uses USB for pictures only. To access pictures, plug in USB cable, set the camcorder to Play and to Memory Card.

To transfer video you need a firewire cable and card. Actual cable will depend on connection your computer has, typically it will be something like this: FireWire_cables.jpg

Additionally, to transfer video you will need a video capture software and codecs, unless the software has the codecs (Nero does). Unfortunately all free video editing software I tried was unable to deal with HD. I had various levels of success with Windows Movie Makver, Ulead and Nero.

You may want to record video in non-HD, and see if you are able to capture that. If your computer can capture that but not HD, and you have the codecs installed, you will need to investigate your computer.

If all you need is a codec, here is a good free candidate: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

It is of course very frustrating that Canon would include nothing with the camcorder to assist users with video caputure.

Hello,
you can access via USB only SD card on your camcoder.
The only way to transfer from the tape is via Firewire (IEE 1394) . You should have this port on your PC or laptop, if not you can buy external firewire card .
regards,
Konstantin

To transfer video to your computer from the ZR100, you will need to connect the camera to the computer via the firewire interface. The ZR100 does not have a USB interface.

I was told by Best Buy I could use the USB to transfer video which is not the case, you have to get the firewire cable. To get the computer to recognize the camera (for still images not video) you have to have the memory card in the camera then hook up the USB.
