Does the player not read one dvd disk, or any dvd disk you put in it? some older players cannot play burned (on a computer) disks and only play commercially pressed disks.
if this is a non commercial dvd -- especially one burned by a stand-alone player/recorder -- it may not have been properly finalized. you should be able to do that from the original device that burned it or from a computer with the proper software. i just finalized a disc which had been left with an open session using Nero, but i think free solutions like CDBurnerXP and possibly Star Office may be able to help, as well. in Nero, i had to go to 'disc info' then the option was available to 'Finalize VR Disc'. After that it played as it was intendd on most DVD players and computers.
