Toshiba sd 1800 dvd player freezes

it freezes the picture , so i try to fwd it it works but then i have to start it over and over , then after a few minutes the machine will not work ,it just keeps trying to load the dvd .
At this point i can't stop it or open it either with or without the remote,i have to unplug the unit and wait awhile to plug it back in so i can open it???
