Press Setup,Right Arrow,Press Down 3 Times,Then Enter 2 times this should reset factory settings, I Hope This Is Correct As I Realize You Cant See The Menu But I Studied The Manual And Wrote Out The Exact Key Movements To Navigate The Restore Factory Settings menu. I have just bought this unit and have been using the menu recently. The only ways i can see to do it would be to either, (as you say) plug it into a HDTV, or navigate the menu blind and hope for the best.
If you press SETUP on your remote once to get to the menu setup screen and then push the RIGHT navigation button 3 times this should take you to the system setup screen. Then push the DOWN navigation button 4 times and then push ENTER. At this point it asks you for a 4 digit password to reset the unit which is a factory preset, 5555, so type that in. This should then reset the DVD player to factory settings.
Hope it helps,
I didn't have that problem before but you can try this:
Press EJECT,SETUP,STOP,I<<(PREV), >>I (NEXT) "FACTORY CONTROL PAGE" menu will apear on the screen. You should find here something like factory reset by scrooling with direction buttons on your remote. When you find it press play and setup
its a generic problem, open the dvd tray and keep it open, go to setup with remote and look for factory reset/default (might be inside preference settings) ok on factory reset..you might need password from your manual :)
