Question about Phones

4 Answers

Static I have two different phone types 1. an old singler unit 900 MHX which I have had for many years with no problems at all on this unit. The second unit is the DCT 746 with two phones, Until this last week have had no problems with either unit. However now when I use either the line will be clear then static comes on either phone in use... Its not the phone line because the old unit has no problem. I have cleaned the housing with a dry clean cloth...left the phones over night without use....Still the little box shows in the right had corner. I have never had a problem with any other phones... Used other Uniden's for several years without this problem. Help......

Hi,

Pls try checking for any new electronic/electrical device that was fairly recent (within the same time period) such as electronic florescent lamps, neon type lights or others of such type/nature. Additionally, you can try switching off other appliances, lights, devices to determine if any affects the Unidens causing the static. In some cases, it could be a neighbor's phone within the same frequency range.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Excessive random static. cannot make out what the caller is saying. have to unplug phone for a few minutes and it clears up. what to do?

What frequency are the phones working on? Older phones used the 2.8 GHz range, later they used 5.2 GHz, and later still 900 MHz. The reason for the changes was because they found out that wireless routers operated in the 2.8/5.2 Ghz bands and interfered with the phones operations. If you find that you have this interferences, try to locate the base unit somewhere that is not in line with the router location so as not to get in the way of the phone communicating to its base. Otherwise, you may just have to upgrade the phones.

My wireless phone is about seven years old. There is a loud static sound in the dial tone and a loud buzzing sound when I am talking, which can also be heard by the person I am talking to. I just put new...

Try disconnecting the cordless phone base unit from the phone jack where it's connected and plug in a basic corded phone. If you still have the noise, the trouble is in the phone line itself and you'll need to contact your telephone service provider.

If the phone line isn't at fault, the trouble is in the base unit. Most likely, the power supply filtering isn't working, and you're hearing hum in the audio as a result. If the base unit uses an external plug-in adapter (a "wall-wart") with a DC output, you can try replacing it with a new one. Radio Shack sells replacements. Just be sure to get one with the same voltage rating, the same or higher current rating, and the right polarity plug. It may be that the old adapter isn't filtering any more because of its age.

If the adapter is an AC output type, or the base has a built-in power supply with a regular AC power cord, you should probably shop for a new phone. The trouble is in the unit itself, and you'll spend more trying to have it fixed than it's worth.

We have a lot of static and loud buzzing on the phone

I had the same issue that started on some 3 year old 5.8 GHZ Uniden cordless phones. I moved it from room to room and same buzzing. I found a older Uniden set I had kept in a desk drawer. I swapped out the power transformer (power cord) and it is clear as a bell now.

The phone will not work with 220 V. And as an FYI, taking the unit out of the country will void your warranty.

A phone uses a voltage drop to determine when it is answered or hung up. What is happening in your case is the phone or base unit, or worse yet the house wiring has a short to ground somewhere. This also cause the static you hear. You can get a regular phone and plug it into the same cord and see if it works normal. If so it is not the house wiring but the phone or base unit. If so you can only hope to find the short yourself which is very time consuming and difficult on modern digital units. Sorry to say it's cheaper to get a new unit than pay for repair. The only other thing that cause those symptoms is the batteries are going dead. I assumed you checked this first. If not you can try changing the battery pack on the phone.

Our 5.8gh uniden phones all have static one land phone 3 extension.

disconnect the ac adapter from the base - before you plug the phone back in with power - press and hold down the menu button (center silver button under the led display) and the number "1" and then plug it back in - keep holding those two buttons until the date and time reappears - it worked for me and it didnt erase the phone numbers stored in the base unit.

Static on my phones

Is the "static" actually the DSL on the other line? If the separate lines are run close together, some crosstalk can be experienced. Try fitting a DSL filter to your 'phone, if this stops it, that is the problem. What you do from there is up to you, but if a simple filter fixes the problem, why worry?
If the "static" is still there when a filter is used, it obviously is something else. Try a different 'phone on the line, 1 'phone only, if there are more than 1 or a computer or fax machine on the line. If it is still present, you may need investigation by your provider.

Background static

1. How old are you phone lines in the house?  Check the "main" terminal connections.  Clean and reconnect.  (Make note how the wires are connected).

2. The power transformers for the phones maybe you trouble also. Unplug all except the main unit.   Check each transfer one at a time. Do you have static?  One or more may be your problem.  Replace the bad ones if needed.

Lots of static heard during use of this phone.

Time for a new phone. Most likely there are some bad solder connections and they could be anywhere. A 2 year old battery should not cause such severe problems so I'd spend the money on a new phone before a new battery.
