Question about Packard Bell GCD-R580B (gcdr580b) Internal 8x CD-ROM Drive

1 Answer

Packard bell CD rom

CD tray opens and closes fine, but would not read any form of CD or DVD. Also this drive is not recognised when I open ' my computer' ( ie the icon has disappeared)
Also when I check the drive in Device manager, I could see some yellow signs on the drive ( either yellow question mark or exclamation marks)

Can any body help with this.

if these fail to fix the problem
It could be a problem withthe lens, you should try cleaning the lens, it's already gone bad there is no harm in trying If you take a little risk can solve . follow the instruction: Don't panic its very simply. 1. When running your pc , open the drawer.> 2. switch off the acpower 3. remove powercable & sata or pata cable 4. remove all the screw from the back side 5. press clip to open the font panel 6. reverse the cd/dvd rw 7. just remove the cover 8. clean the optical lance 9. use a little( not much )oil place on two steel shaft 10.cover all the equipment 11.now you can fit to your pc Ifit does the same problem please change the cd/dvd rw because the lance has defected

Packard Bell computer won't play dvds.

This sounds like a common problem. You need to install the drivers (small programs that instruct the computer to notice and manipulate peripherals, like a dvd or cd player, sound card, etc...).

The easiest place to find your specific driver is at the Packard Bell web site under support > Downloads. There are MANY sites (even some that advertise on this very site) that say they have the drivers for your dvd drive, but go directly to your manufacturer's web site. These companies that provide drivers for computers install a program into your computer and there is a fee for use of these web sites.

UPDATE: I just checked the Packard Bell Web Site and was unable to find specific drivers for your particular model. They stopped making them some time ago, and no longer support the model. That being said, you can still conceivably find the drivers, it will just take some investigative work on your part. In doing a broad search on the internet, I found that many people are looking for that very driver, which is an indication it has become hard to find.

CD ROM is jammed-wont open

This has happened to me. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I'll place a CD or DVD in the tray and start to close it without making sure that the disk is seated flat in the tray. If it's ****-eyed the CD wil shatter when the tray is closed. The only way to remove the pieces inside the CD drive is to take apart the CD drive. Might be easier just to replace the unit. They run from about $25.00 to $75.00. One other note: You can try to open the tray manually by inserting the end of a paper clip into a small hole on the front bezel of the drive.

My cd/dvd opens then closes

> I've already replaced it once

Well, I've seen CD-drives that would re-open, when you try to close them -- it is _falsely_ detecting a "jam" as the tray is closing, and then just re-opens the tray, rather than "forcing" itself to close.

Replacing the CD-drive is the only way to fix that type of "false-positive" jam-detection conditions.

But, since you've done that, either you were unlucky-enough that the replacement drive was also "defective", or, you have a computer-virus on your computer that is maliciously issuing commands to the CD to "open-the-tray".
